Hi all, Please help with this if you can. it seems I have not found a clear answer on this question. I have a 73 914 2.0. If I go out in the morning before I run the car the oil level reads about half an inch above the high/full mark. If I start/run the car then shut it off ; wait 4-5 min then check it its right on the high mark. So the Question is which method is correct? in the am after car has sat for hours or after start up then shut off and wait 4-5 min? Thank you 914 people - much appreciated, Joe

Sounds like you're ok. As long as the level is not too high you should be ok.

It would make sense that after running the oil level is a little lower since oil is everywhere in the engine and not in the pan.

Hey Joe,
The markings on the 914 dipstick are pretty deceptive as they represent about a pint of fluid bottom mark to top.
If you grossly overfill the oil, which cannot compress, like air, that will force the oil past the seals damaging them.
Most of us type iv types watch this closely.
You said a little over the top mark when cold, and below the top mark when at operating temperature, as has been said looks spot on.
Some of our racing brethren run with an extra quart in the sump, babying the motor until it’s hot.
