Took my 914 out for a cruise yesterday & had shifting problems on the highway with no 4th or 5th gear shifts. In the garage at startup gear shifting (wobbly) was loose into all gears. On the highway 1st. 2nd & 3rd was ok but nothing into 4th. or 5th.? Need advice where to look & start for repairs. 914's are so low, getting under the 914 has issues for inspections as I get older (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) Tom, Looking for 914 repair shops in the Petoskey MI area is difficult. |

Start with bushings and the shifter linkage set screws
Likely a set screw came loose Or a bushing disintegrated |

I had this same problem where it just starts happening - where it was working fine before. I bet its the cone screw at the transmission linkage. Use blue locktite!

pull back the boot on the engine side of the firewall around the shift rod. I'm going to bet the bushing there is in pieces...

And you don't need to remove the rod. Get a new nylon bushing & slice the wall open at 45 degrees. Voila!!! Push it in & you're good to go. BTDT. Easy repair. |

I built a set of wheel cradles out of scrap wood for this issue. Can get it a foot off the ground with 2x4 and 2x6 lumber, stackable and very stable. Race Ramps if you have the $$$.

Check out Munk's Motors in Waterford, MI. : https://www.munks.com/ They fixed my old Audi Q7 when I was visiting family in MI. They also had a few 914s in the shop when I was there last. Otherwise I think McMark is in Grand Rapids? |

I have a couple cheap drive on AutoZone ramps. That works for this cone screw job. I will put the floor jack under the driver's side as well for even more room. Hardest part is getting the boot back on the firewall. Fold the rubber back a little bit press it in place and let it flip back over the firewall lip is my trick. Some days it goes better than others.
