I bought this car from a guy who had it for the past 4 years and did nothing to it. The owner before him did a ton to it, and has most the shop receipts to show it. Engine was rebuilt with a 254 cam, mallory dual points disty, and dual weber 44 IDF carbs.
The carbs were a mess, so I rebuilt them. Car runs better, but still pissy. Timing, points, cap, and vacuum stuff look good, but I believe the carbs are jetted way too rich for this setup. Honestly, I wish it was just FI so I didn't have to mess with this stuff. Good news is, the guy shoved all that stuff in a box and I still have it. I don't know if it all works though, or if it's truely "complete". So my first question is, will the FI operate correctly with the Mallory (no vac advance) dual point disty, and will it operate correctly with the different cam? Second is what is all this stuff in the pictures and am I missing anything? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/blog-1136452755.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/blog-1136452763.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/blog-1136452778.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/blog-1136452805.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/blog-1136452789.jpg) So this is what I have so far, correct me if I'm wrong here... 1. Runners with fuel injectors and fuel rails. (seals and rubber items need replaced) 2. 5 extra injectors... why? dunno, but it scares me. 3. Intake plenum with TB, throttle switch, and air regulator attached. 4. Extra throttle switch... eh.. more extras, I don't like that. 5. Electronic fuel pump. 6. Manual fuel pump??? 7. I have no idea. 8. TB to air cleaner elbow. 9. 2 manifold pressure sensors.. one looks like rebuilt, other looks shot. 10. Don't know 11. Non oil bath air filter housing (with very dirty filter inside) and bracket. 12. ECU (d-jet I suppose) and wiring harness. And then theres a picture of my relay board. I also found the cover for it when I was digging this stuff out of the boxes. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/clap.gif) Anything else you can think of? I don't know if there is a head temp sensor on the engine right now or not. I'll have to check. Dan |

No mallory work (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) the d-jet need the additional trigger contacts in the stock dizzy. They let the injectors open (and close). You need the original dizzy. I also converted my 1700 back to FI, no major problem, but be aware of bad ground or other conections. Makes sure all connectiions are tight and the whole intake system has no leeks (very important for a good running engine) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_flagge6.gif) |

#7 looks like a facet fuel pump (aftermarket)
#10 are stock alternator controler/regulators (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_flagge6.gif) |

Can be done? But will run like crap with a aftermarket cam. My 2 cents. rebuild the 44's and let it go at that. BTW 44's might be a little to big for a street engine. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/slap.gif) Dave |

its kinda like getting circumcized...
Can you go back....sure but not without major surgery... Get the carbs right, get smaller venturis, like 36mm or 38mm and much smaller main jets. Rich |

change the cam and it will run great with a little assembly. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/piratenanner.gif)

#6 looks to be a mechanical fuel pump. Not much use on our engines; the crankcases were not machined for the pump nor do they have the bits inside to drive it.
#10 is a pair of voltage regulators that plug into the relay board. Your injection stuff all looks like 1.7 D-jet stuff. D-jet won't work with a non-D-jet distributor (unless Mueller and Fiid get their "trigger points emulation" stuff up for sale), nor will it work well with a big cam. The easiest thing to do would be to keep futzing with the carbs until they work well. Which probably, as has been mentioned, means smaller venturis and re-jetting. --DD |

you might consider purchasing a used 1.7 engine to build up to FI installation. i mention this because 1.7's should be the less expensive of the 3 engines to find. of course, as someone will post, if you're going to do all that work to rebuild a 1.7, why not just do a 2.0L which is really true BUT..... depending on your mechanical ability, you can make is a cheap learning exercise on a 1.7 and apply what you learn to a 2.0L later.

I was afraid the cam was going to be an issue. I wasn't expecting the Mallory to be a problem too, (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif)
The engine was rebuilt 5k ago (but that was 5-6 years ago) and I don't really want to take it all apart to change out the cam, although I do have the original one. I guess I need to buy some weber jets or even a jet kit so I have some to swap in and out. |

Looks like it might need some jetting. I've got 40IDFs and they are jetted like this.
28mm venturis, 50 idle, 200 air, and 115 mains It runs well, but seems a little on the ritch side (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) |
