I purchased a 1.7 from EASY. before I put the motor in I did a valve adjustment and noticed the intake v. on cyl. #2 was different than the rest. It also had a dish shape wearing into the top. I adjusted by feel best I could and went for it. When the motor fired there was a valvetrain noise coming from that side of the motor.
I inspected it and found not only did the vavle lash increase but as the rocker pushes the valve it moves side to side. the motor is out now. should I run it, or pull the head and replace the valve? |

If the valve is moving from side to side, it's likely the valve guide that needs to be replaced, not just the valve. If one guide is worn, the chances are very good they're all worn. Get the heads rebuilt.

the rocker is moving side to side on the shaft. the tip of the adjuster is captured in the dish on the head of the valve.....

Eventually, the top of the valve will mushroom to the point where it cannot be removed from the head.
It is also possible that the screw/valve tip could catch and bend or break the valve. You are into the soft metal on the valve tip...your adjustment will not last any length of time. Your choice... |

decided to relace the valve,EASY is going to work with me on this. I will put a new valve, run the SOB till it breaks and deal with it then. I tell ya these things can put you through some serious mental gymnastics.....

If you're going to be pulling one head off the motor, just yank 'em both off. Send 'em to Len at HAM, or maybe Adrian at Audirac.
Or take the motor back to EASY and get another one. Isn't that what a warranty is for? --DD |

Hi Dave, I talked to John at EASY, he has been real good with all my needs. He understands what is going on and will replace the bad valve.
The head came off this am. It looks like there is a problem with the intake valve in the other cyl., it has a pit forming in the middle of it. that makes both intake valves on the same side I know it is the cheap way out but will it work to get new valves and lap them to the seat and go for it. I also pulled the cyl.'s to check the rings and they are pretty gunked up, I'm thinking I should clean them and re install. should I lightly hone lthe cyl. Basicly, what is the bast way to freshen it up a little without spending lots I am eventually going to build a 2.0 when I do a complete restore. This one is for just driving and shaking the car down for problems. |
