I've posted this on Pelican and PCA Potomac, but I thought I'd post here too.

I'm getting ready to put my 914 on the market and I'd like some help with putting a price on it. A little history... My father bought it new in '74 and used it as a daily driver. He drove it for 10 years and it started getting old, having problems and he just let it sit. He ended up giving it to me and I put it in indoor storage for about 8 years or so. Then in the late 90's I began restoring it. I first removed the engine, cleaned it and replaced all the oil seals and everything else that was worn out. The fuel injection was not working so I replaced it with the single carb setup that you see in the pictures (I know, I know), but I have all of the FI components in a box in my attic. I've also replaced all the rubber fuel lines. It runs good even with the single carb, although I know it's a no-no. Now on to the good stuff. I have a friend who owned a bodyshop and was a hot rodder and very familiar with restoring cars. I gave it to him for however long it took and said make it look beautiful. He dissassembeled the entire car, removed the small amount of rust that was on the passenger side, painted it with the factory original blue metallic and charged me $4000. He put in a new windshield too. I also had four new struts put in at that time. When I got it home, I worked on the brakes, replaced a frozen caliper and all new brake cables. Just recently I put in a new master cylinder and a new set of pedal bushings. I'm trying to remember everything I've done, but it's been so much I may have missed something. Regarding the interior. I found an old guy in Manassas who worked out of his house and specialized in stitching interiors and tops for Porsches. He reupholstered the seats and the rear firewal cover using original-style materials. They look just like new.

I should add that the car has been stored indoors in my printshop (climate controlled) from the mid 80's until the resto in the late 90's when I sent it out for bodywork/paint. Since the resto, it has been garaged, covered and never driven in any kind of weather. That's about 20+ years of never getting wet.

Also, I went looking through my paperwork and found the original sales receipt, color chart and brochure for the car.

I think $6-7000. Maybe $500-1000 more with fuel injection installed and operating. I am accepting your description that there is no rust.

If it were mine, I would put it on Ebay with a fairly high resereve and see what happens.

OK, I'll ding you a bit for the carbs and a bit because it is a 1.8. Now, without going through the car and inspecting the usual areas (hell hole, longs, etc), let's just assume that they are in good shape.

Nice car, original color, documented history, the original parts to restore the FI, on the East Coast ---- I'd estimate a value of between $7,500 to $8,500

I've already been told to take a pics of the hell hole, which I'm going to do. I'm also going to get some close ups of the other usual problem areas before listing it. Regarding the FI, it's all in a box, but it's not working. That's why I removed it in the first place.

I have one at CAMP 914 73, 1.8 Marathon blue, but stock injection that I am having a hard time selling at $6500. Good luck at anything over that.

Nice 1.7s and 1.8s are topping out around $5K. With new paint, maybe you can get $6K. No harm in putting it on ebay with a reserve and seeing what happens.

FWIW, when I look at the pics I see a cracked dash ($550) and rusted, wavey bumper tops (another $500) as expenses needed to make the car as nice as it should be. Also, the aftermarket wheels detract from the car (for my tastes). I think a set of 2L Fuchs would get you a higher end price.

I'd keep the car. I guarantee that you will regret selling it. :-)

I'm sure I will regret it someday. I've regretted selling a lot of my past cars, but the fact is, I'm more of an American V8 hotrod guy and I really just don't enjoy driving this car. All it's done for years is take up a space in my two car garage with a very occasional drive. I want my garage back.

Here is one on eBay that I've been tracking that has to bring the max anyone can expect - assuming it is as described.

At what point will we see some level of appreciation on these cars? I am continuing my budget restoration but would like to think that we would see at least 5-10% appreciation per year - or is that optimistic?

If you want your garage back just sell it for what you paid for it if you can get that and move on.

You definitely need to find a twisty country road to exercise this car on.

These clean 1.7s sure look like great conversion cars (big 4 or 6). :-)

Jeff, one thing, It is an East coast car on the East coast. I don't see anymore value added for that??
West coast car on the East coast usually will add value.
I have to agree, sell it, be happy with what you get out of it and move on to a Hemi V8 Mopar or Big Block Chevy or something that is more to your liking.
EBAY cars are not a true indicator of value. Any auction is swayed in one or more ways.
This particular car is, In my opinion at the top for value. And I have seen the pics and spoken to the seller.
