What clear coat should I use on my gas tank? I would think that there is a special use clearcoat that will resist gasoline?

Also, can you clearcoat the gascap? Mine keeps dulling over time...

Here's what I did to make the tank like new...

Cleaned the inside of the tank with POR tank refurbisher kit. (or you can have it hot tanked at a radiator shop).

Get it powder coated in semigloss black

Then apply POR fuel tank internal sealing/coating on inside of tank.

You need to get the tank powder coated FIRST as the heat fromt he oven will melt the fuel tank sealing kit.

Will look like this when finished...

I just put my gas tank back in the car. I sloshed some hot water with soap and some Simple Green around inside a bunch of times. There was no rust on the inside.

As far as the outside goes, it would look hot powdercoated glossy black. Too bad my oven isn't big enough.

The inside is fine...

I just wanted to address the exterior of the tank. I have epoxy splatter paint on the exterior now and thought that I might need to clear coat the exterior to protect the paint.

I think Epoxy is fairly resistent.

Here's a hint: don't pour gas on the outside of the tank. It goes on the INSIDE.

They weren't sure how recently "empty" of gas it was and they tried to look inside, but it was a bit dark.

So I gave them my lighter so they could get a better look.

{BOOM!}

Actually, I told them I had cleaned it thoroughly with Marine Clean and let it dry (opened) in the sun for a few hours to evaporate. And then for a few days in the garage.

It had no smell of gas, so they didn't care.
