(Piggybacking on the "how much have you spent" poll from yesterday...)

This morning I attented a lecture on "Inter-Generational Diversity in the Workplace". More specifically, someone explaining the differences between the 4 generations currently existing in American culture.

She made a point to say that Baby Boomers do the least amount of saving, due to their affinity with expensive material possesions, including "those fancy restored cars".

Shame on your boomers! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

"Inter-Generational Diversity in the Workplace". Where do they come up with these words gezzz
I suppose a garbage man to them is a sanitation technician huh?

My .02¢ worth of which is only worth .001¢ with adjusted inflation...

That lady needed to get ALL her facts together before spouting off. Yes we boomers like nice things and we are willing to work very hard for them and yes some are still willing to do so even with being in debt up to their eye balls.

We may save less (so she says and I disgree), but we are carrying the economy on our backs with our spending. We make the whole ball of wax function. We start skrimping and the home industry, automakers, electronics, etc goes to hell in a hand basket, thus the economy ends up in the toilet. Correction...skip the automaker part, they are doing that anyhow.

True we have the to hell with it on waiting and want it now mentality, but we make things happen.

A number of studies have pointed to a very low savings rate in the US. One study showed an alarming number of people in their 50s had less than $25K saved up for retirement, yet they still thought they'd do OK when it came time to retire. Something like 12% of the people surveyed actually had enough money saved, and were continuing to save, at a rate that would allow them to maintain their lifestyles past retirement. The rest were going to be substantially poorer after retirement, or simply wouldn't be able to retire at all.

What did she say about those of us who wish we would have been a baby boomer but were stuck being born in the 70's (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/icon8.gif) and grew up with heavy metal in the 80's (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/aktion035.gif) ?

I can totally associate with that statement.

The gist of it was that Gen X'ers were cynical, skeptical, unimpressed by authority and stay at a job for an average of 1 year. All in all it was pretty funny.

I can scan the handout if you like.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

It sounds like she was making some kind of anti-capitalism statement, sorta like she got left behind, and this is her way of justifing where she's "at" in life.

After the presentation was over, did she bum a ride to get to the bus stop so doesn't miss her ride home? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

So DREWVW, did you raise your hand and tell her that you invested in a 914-4 and that it would double it's value before you retire? Next time offer her a ride in your 914 and show her how your investment = fun. Something she's missed in life.

No I didn't. My team produced a film that was airing right after her lecture, so my mind was elsewhere. I perked up when she said the bit about "fancy restored cars".

Maybe I should have defended the baby boomer car enthusiasts...but I didn't. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)

By the way, this woman was no hippie. She's a consultant for the hospital and is probably pulling down an ungodly amount of money.

I'm 32, And I didn't start saving my 401K till I was 29. Now the 401K is growing nicely, and I got a few other things stashed.

I'm forcing the GF to start saving also.

For me the best way to save was to pay off my car, and dump that money into my ESPP at my work. the ESPP works out that I get what I paid in the car back every 1.5 years, but I was going to be paying for the Jeep for 4 years. Right there made me figure out how I was getting fucked over.

Right on. Saving is for the weak. As long as they keep raising the debt ceiling and cutting taxes, we should be good right? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)
