There are two fittings on the bottom of the tank. Doe's it make any differance which one goes to the fuel pump? Both fittings fit both holes. Is there a surge tank on one of them?

The main line has mesh screen in the tank, and I believe it is larger in diameter, the other line is just a return line. They both come up inside the surge tank. I would imagine that if you try and pull gas from the return line fitting you'll have a reduced flow.

I'm not sure, based on the year/fuel system, but on the 70 914-6 the two tank openings are different. The opening in the tank for the main line is about 10-12mm, and its large enough for the filter screen to be passed though from the bottom into the tank. The return line opening comes to a point inside the tank, and the opening is only about 3-5mm wide. If the tanks remained the same through out the years and the fuel system changes, then it should be pretty obvious when looking up into the tank which opening is which.
Hope this helps, maybe someone with the same year/fuel system can confirm this for you. |

There are baffles around the pickup. I'm not sure if the return port is also enclosed by them. If you look inside the tank, the baffles look like a small coffee can around the pickup.

my car is a 74 both the return line and the pump line will bolt to either hole in the tank. Dave if I look thru the top I should see the baffels? and I should screw the large fitting on that one?

You prolly wont see from the bottom. The baffle surrounds both. The return is the smaller hole, nearest the seam IIRC. The new screen wont fit the return hole (IIRC). The screens are the same as a bug one, BTW.

Any VW parts store. Just ask for a petcock valve screen, or a tank-to-line screen. My bug is a 69, but most should fit. It slides on over the tube that goes inside the tank. Make sure you remove any left over washer looking things before sliding on. The open end of the screen has a washer-like re-inforcement thingy (when you get the new screen, you'll know what I mean). Mine had 2 on it from tearing the old screen off improper like. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Some people, huh?

Has anyone ever changed their tank fittings over to a -AN style?
If so, how did you do it? |

I bought the vw filter kit, but both the screen and the fitting were to small for the 914 lines. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

QUOTE(bernbomb914 @ Mar 6 2003, 10:36 PM) Where do I get a new screen? do they slid in from the bottom? Bernie Don't get a screen. Put a filter in the fuel line. If you have a screen, tear it out. They clog up eventually and cause you no end of mystery problems ... until you rip the damm thing out. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ar15.gif) |

Bernie,
I was told this from my local VW shop. I was thinking the size was difernt as well. They told me they were the same size. I haven't got mine yet. Hope yer not bummed at me... Just relaying info from someone else. BTW what year did you get? Are they all the same? I was thinking that only the screen is used, not the entire fitting... |
