It's called "valve grinding compound", and it's sold at REAL auto parts stores.
That said, whatever made you think it's necessary? Something somebody said on the internet? Wanna buy a nice bridge in NYC? Your machinist did a great job of setting the heads up in his mill and surfacing them to within an RCH of perfection, and you wanna introduce the precision of spinning a cylinder you're holding in your highly precise hands? When will this myth finally die? You DID have the heads surfaced by a REAL machinist, right? One with some experience at doing this? 'Cause if you didn't, we're wasting our time here ............ Jim,
Check out the "Pistons, Cylinders, and Rings Explained" section of Jakes forums. Charles Navarro of LN posted a nice article on head sealing. |

I think I remember Raby saying to make a paste with ajax, and use that as the compound. Mike |

Yep.. You have it under the Kitchen sink..
Ajax or Comet mixed to a paste like consistency is the best thing for finish lapping.. It cleans up very easily as well and thats a biggie! |

Interesting, I'm about to start an engine rebuild here shortly. As soon as my parts get back from balancing. I've been wondering about the head gaskets and if that was the way to go or lapping. Ajax (hmmmm). Well for now I have plenty of time to think about it and learn more.
