Hey Guys:
It's been a while since I've had a chance to work on the 914 and post to this list.
I finally had some time today, but didn't get very far. I'm hoping you guys can give me some help on this.
Heres the details:
All fuel lines replaced. Gas tank was removed and sealed. Fuel filter replaced. Sock filter cleaned. Flexible fuel lines are coming into engine compartment, but not connected. I'm trying to determine which is the pressure line so I can connect up properly with new lines.
I put a soda can at the end of each line in the engine compartment and expected one of them to get gas in it when I turned the key. The gas tank is about 1/3 full with fresh gas. I can hear the fuel pump work for about 1 second when I turn the key to first position and if I turn the key to the second position it sounds like it'll run until I release the key, but I'm not sure if this is the pump working or something else working, but both soda cans are still bone dry. I have the starter disconnected, so the engine won't turn, but I still expected one of the soda cans to fill with gas when I turned the key.
What am I missing here? Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I'm bummed that I finally get some quality time with the 914 and I'm already stuck!

Did you kink the lines under the tank? Happens if you made the lines too long.

First off, if the lines are dry, then the pump needs to be primed. It does not like to run dry at all. It should be filled with gas before you start.
Second, the pump only runs for a second, then shuts off until the engine is detected running. So, just like with vapor lock, turn the key, turn the key, etc.
I think the pressure line is marked "D".
The pump bypass line and the return line go into a "Y" back to the tank.

use a jumper wire on the relay board to run the pump.

forgot which pins you need to jump, ask Brad ...

Thanks for the replies guys.
I removed the fuel pump "door" in the front and pulled the pump and filter out.
I removed the line to the filter output and got gas out. Then I removed the line to the pump output and got gas. Then I put it all back together and tried it and I got gas pumped to the engine compartment!! It seems to be working fine now. I've connected all the fuel lines and started replacing all the vacuum lines. I'll try and finish that up tonight.

Hey guys:
Still having trouble getting my 914 running...
I connected up the new vacuum lines and tried to start it up today - no go.
It doesn't even turn over. When I turn the key, I hear the pump working, but no turning.
Is this vapor-lock?
If I hold the key for a few seconds, it'll turn over, but won't start. I'm stumped.
New injectors and seals, new fuel lines, new filter, resealed tank.
I got it to start and run a month or so ago, but not for more than 5 seconds.
Anybody got any ideas? I need some help here - please.

What is the fuel pressure ??

Make certain that the injector plug for the dizzy is plugged in firmly.

Hey Brad:
I don't know what the fuel pressure is.
I suppose I'd need to get a fuel pressure tester to find out?
Where can I get one of these?
I will check the injector plug for the dizzy is plugged in firmly tomorrow night.

Pretty easy:

Go to a decent auto parts store (Napa or such) and ask for a fuel injection fuel pressure tester. They should have something for under 25$.

We are looking for 28-30 psi of fuel pressure. I can show you with pics how to jumper the fuel pump for testing (so you dont have to have the key on).

Does the car still have points or does it have pertronix ?

Thanks for the reply.
I just got back from the local NAPA Auto parts store, looking for a fuel injection pressure tester guage.
They only had one for $50 and another (better) for $125.
I will check online to see if I can locate one for about $50.
My 914 still has the points, which I did replace. I'm sure they still could use some adjusting.
Some pics would definately help.

Andy,

Lose the points. I cannot help you if we are battling a "nipple" built up on the contacts of the points from you cranking it over. Order a 70$ Pertronix from GPR or Pelican.

I have no idea why the pressure tester was so high. I normally point people to Kragen/Shucks/Checker.
