Why are there two sets of brake lines comming off my 1987 Carrera front Calipers? One is obviously the right one to connect the other is forward of the the correct one and goes to what?

TWO hoses per caliper? Common on Volvos, never seen it on a 911. Pictures, please. Power assist is done at the mastrer cylinder, not downline ............The Cap'n

Duane,
You need to send a picture.

If you have turbo calipers there is brake line that goes between the two half's. but only one feed line and then one bleeder on each half.

The carrera calipers should have only one feed line.

Are you looking at the bleeder? and if the PO removed the bleeder plug then you may
have two tapped holes, but one would be the feed line and the other is the bleeder. The bleeder is on the top and the feed line is on the back about in the middle, lined up with the piston.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) with Pops. If you have Turbo calipers then they're different from A-Calipers with big spacers (aka: Carrera Calipers). They will indeed have crossover lines. Might be on to something.

(BTW: Pontiac is such a beautiful town)

It wasnt another line, was an ABS sensor...

What was it mom said not to do or I'd go blind? Damn...

I was going to say ABS because that's the only thing I had to deal with on the set I did.

I took a dremel and cut off the mount on the spring and replated everything...

Something inconsistent here. 87 Carreras do not have ABS. I drove one for 10+ years.

I believe the first 911's with ABS were the C2/C4 models (aka 964) starting in 1990.

ABS started appearing on Porsche's in 1989-1990 models along with air bags. I have later carrera calipers on my 914 and they only have the one brake line. I would say post a picture or two and I bet we can figure out what is up. Part numbers?

Buddy, we were at a track event at Road America....

You know the track car hits 6000 RPM in 5th at 3 different spots? (probably 150+)

Anyway, the "sensor" that was in a brake pad on a Carrera is a brake pad wear indicator. Most of those were cut off and defeated as most performance pads didn't have the required notch.

The original sensors (most required replacement as they were worn out when they went off) were some high temp plastic with two metallic probes that would touch the rotor and "make" the circuit to turn on a light. Totally useless in my opinion. I keep better tabs on how my brakes are wearing.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you didn't have multiple brake line inlet fittings on your calipers.


I went with SC fronts. The rotors are cheaper. The track car uses turbo brakes (rotors are NOT cheaper)


Got your 3.2 in that thing yet?

Ditto the pad sensors. The pads should have a notch that the sensor clips into.
ABS is a whole different animal, it has nothing to do with the calipers or brake pads, it's more related to the hubs.
