I finally decided to part with my 914-6 that I have owned since 1978. I was hoping to get some advice regarding the value of the car. The car was last driven in 1982, has approx. 80,000 miles. It is in need of a complete restoration in my opinion. Needs paint...pretty good body, straight with some minor rust in the rear trunk near the lights, and the front trunk seal area. The engine has not been started in 25 years, yet is complete and 99% original with matching numbers and a certificate from Porsche. The only changes that I am aware of are stainless fuel lines and 2 post oil sender. Still a stock 2.0 ltr. The targa top is smooth and painted and the targa sails have had the vinyl removed.

Pictures at http://picasaweb.google.com/rjherrin99/Porsche9146

I have been checking ebay for comps, but the prices seem all over the place.
I would really appreciate some honest evaluations. I have not messed with the car much in the last 20 years and don't know much about repair cost today nor parts prices or availability.

Thanks for your help.

Looks like a excellent start for someone looking to do a full restoration.

I see some yellow, I assume it's a color change...But also has what looks like real nice parts that only need reconditioning.

Being a non running project, Its hard to price. If it were mine and someone offered me 10k it would be gone...

Ferg :)

Yes it was yellow, silver all over ala 916 when I purchased it, took it to the metal and painted black in 1979. If I was to do it all over today, yellow would be my choice.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the offer, too bad it's not my wifes car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
This sold on ebay a couple of days ago:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Porsch...1QQcmdZViewItem

So I think mine is north of that. Plus some nut is sellling this for $46,000.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-914...1QQcmdZViewItem

I think the easiest thing to do is put on Ebay at the end of the month and let potential buyers check it out prior to that. Just let the market determine the price.
Then I won't have to negotiate or get offers of diamonds, Superbowl tickets, etc. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I've got to know why this has been parked since 1982?
Looks like a much better example than the one that went on ebay for $8k.

Why consider the 914-6 that the owner wants north of $40,000 excessive? I'd love to see them go for that sort of money someday. I remember when Speedsters were cheap and unwanted, now they're through the roof. The 914-6 is possibly the next Speedster (hopefully)?

I had heard of a 914-6 selling for $32,000 a year or so ago, so maybe the market is stretching the limits.

Please remember though that car was a 71 and the 71 models are much rarer than the 70 models.
We have here a perfectly running silver 1970 914-6 (absolutely perfectly running as it just drove here from delaware!) for 15,000 as an example. Sixes have all gone through the roof, so even a parts six is worth 5,000. I would value your non running car at 12,000.

I don't think that it is excessive for a completely original car. This car seems to be described as "the little old lady car" but it has Fuchs in one set of pictures, steel wheels in an other. Most of the exterior trim has been replaced. It is described as one of the finest examples of 914-6's...is it? I don't know but I'm sure plenty of people here would know.

But, I do agree with you I think the six is finally getting the attention it deserves.

I do not see how ebay, an auction that you have no way of knowing the actual results on the final bid, is any way to value anything!!!
If you are just looking to sell the car then by all means put it on ebay with no reserve and wait for the bids to come in.
Values are determined by "actual" sales, not ones that are inflated by outside and inside bidders.
Auctions do not determined value.period All they show you is what someone is emotinally willing to pay for an item.

I have never sold a car on Ebay so I don't quite understand your comments. Are you saying a search of completed auctions are not acurate? Are people manipulating sales prices?

So instead of giving anybody with a computer who wants a 914-6 a chance to buy my car, I should just stick a sign in the window put it in my driveway and the sales price will be the real value?

Your percieved value can be way different. Maybe the guy who bought the car can paint/ rebuild engines/ do body work etc. His value might be a lot more than yours.

I disagree with your definition of "value". Every single item we buy has some emotional value. Why do think we have marketing and advertisments?

A Porsche and a Honda both get you from A to B? So should'nt the Value be the same?

Of course not..

Every car I have purchased had a large portion of emotion invloved. That's why I wanted to sell on Ebay. I hate selling my car...I hate putting a price on it. I don't want to negotiate with anyone.

I kept this car as aproject for my son and myself but he is not interested.
So time to sell.... and I hope who ever buys it is a pasionate Porsche person.

I thought about that. I rebuilt the carbs myself years ago, I still have my flow meter for tuning. It is a long story but when I stored the car I thought it would only be for a couple of months so I did not prep it for long turn storage. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I am concerned that all the seals are dried out and major rust in the cylinders. Do you have any advice about getting it running?

Thanks, RJ

I think he is trying to say that a lot of the auctions close but the buyer doesn't complete the transaction for financial reasons. I agree to some extent. I like to look for 914s on ebay and I see a lot of relisted cars (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Get a 19mm wrench on the crank pulley and see if it turns over... if it does your looking at a saturday project to remove and clean the fuel tank and rebuild the carbs it's going to leak oil but it doesn't matter people are going to know it needs work but if you can show them that it runs it's just one more positive instead of a maybe. If you were closer I would snatch it up I have saved quite a few 911's that have been sleeping.

Shill bidding is rampant on ebay...

I agree with Boxstr, to many uncertainty's on ebay to use past sales as a price guide to valuate a car that is potentially for sale.

That being said, listing your car on Ebay and seeing what happens is a totally different thing. That would be what I would do, with a optimistic reserve.

Ebay is cheap advertising if nothing else.

Shill bidding is rampant on ebay?

It's been going on with coins for a number of years and eBay does not do squat about it.

There's a well known ring of shill bidders that shill coins up all the time.

This is why we put our coins in our eBay store with a no haggle price.

If they like it and can afford it so be it.

Since we discovered this ring, a group of dealers stopped putting their items on core auctions as a protest.

eBay isn't what it used to be that's for sure.
