I'm not positive but it looks like an old 901 from a 911 Can you get the number off the tranny and post it?

your model is just a casting part #.
There should be a type # preceding the serial # such as 901/02

the 914 trans is technically a type 914 trans...
(flipped ring gear from a 901)

the type 901 trans is from the early 911's
the internal parts will interchange, but the transmissions will not

Early 911,912. 65-68. You need the Type preceeding the serial number as Dave said.

Chill cast aluminum case, Type901, used from 1964-1968 in 911s and 912s (as well as 904s and probably 906s. Smaller differential, and possibly side bearings, but the same R&P. Smaller threads (12mm) on the aft end of the mainshaft, and slightly different synchro internals. Other parts are very much the same as the the 911 and type 915 trannies. Some were 4 speeds (and the 4th gear is worth serious bucks), and the ratios vary depending on the engine and any special order setups. The Cap'n

Cap'n,

Thanks for the info about the early vs. late 901s. I used it to update the Wiki...

http://www.roadglue.com/wiki/index.php/901_transmission

If anyone else sees anything missing or incorrect on that page, feel free to edit it!

Thanks,

Richard

I thought one could just flip the ring and change the nose-cone to adapt for a mid-engine (914) application (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I'm sure you could find another 901 already set up to drop in your 914 for less ... and closer to home too? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

My '66 912 has a 4-speed 901 ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ... and Nadella shafts (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Some 4-speeds have LSDs too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
