Hey everyone. The yellow '74 914 arrived on the truck today. I met the guy at the mall. I'll post another posting about the fiasco of getting the car off the truck.
Problem: Start the car and it idles at or above 3000 rpm. There was one or two hoses that looked to go into the air box that were not connected them. I reconnected them but that did not help. There is a hole on the drivers side on the engine block that does not have any hoses connected. The air box to throttle body does not seat all the way down. I tried to press it down but it would not stay. I left the car at the mall as I am afraid to drive the car around with it idling so high. I did a couple circles in first and second gear. Please help!! I do not have a haynes manual yet as I did not expect to have any problems the very first day that it arrived. Argh!!! The wiring is definately a hack job. I'll post pictures later with circles around the various parts. I just got home and I am trying to relax. Very bad day. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) We my very first 914 and the first immediate problem. -David |

It probably bounced around so much on the transport that it yanked the air filter off the engine along with all the hoses.
This is an easy fix. Print these pics off and take a cell phone with you. B |

That has to be a vaccum leak. Must have popped a hose off during transport. I would go back and check EVERY hose, for cracks and being weather they are connected or not. If there is a hose missing from what sounds like the head breather port then there is probably a missing connection to the air cleaner, which would give you this high of an idle.

Any of the hoses leading to this plenum will cause a 3k RPM idle.
The main one that is probably OFF is this one that goes to the OIL FILLER from the intake manifold. Plug it back in. Dont worry about the one in the head right now. Just make it run. B |

Beyond that, check to make sure the throttle return spring exists.

That is it. See the fitting without the hose ? That hose goes directly to the intake plenum. BIG LEAK.
I see Mikey made no attempt to clean the engine up. B |

1) Completely disconnected. Goes to the driver's side to a T splitter. Then to the engine (I think. No good pictures (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) )
2) It was connected but it is loose. 3) Electrical tape is around this. Barely stays on. I'm not sure if it is sealed. Came off with out any effort. So I stuck it back in. 4) Thottle body is disconnected from air intake. I tried to slip this on but it will not stay nore will it go on all the way. More pics. I can see a red line that is just "back" of the fitting. Put it on. If the proper hose was used.. it wouldnt have fallen off.

Anyone have a clear pic of how most of these hoses are suppose to go? Oil breather tube?
I'll check out pelican's site. Trying to download from the 914world.com/downloads/ site right now. Brad, do you have a zip file out there rather than all the individual files for the tech manual? -David |

First order of business. BUY all the correct size lines (metric sized) They used Merican lines that dont fit metric fittings. It will run you 50-60 to redo all the breather lines. Buy the cloth braided style.

NONE of the lines should have hose clamps on them.

Pedal is all the way up. It sticks a little but I have pulled it all the way up and started the car when I was there and it did not change it.

The single zip is too big for all the files it takes 30 minutes to download even with high speed.

No.3 in your pic above needs to go to the oil breather fitting (which is it way to big).
Where is a ZOIS ?? Unless you put that hose on the air cleaner... it NEVER ran correctly. B |

No thermal time switch.. wire hanging there ready to ground itself and fire the cold start injector.
