(IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon8.gif) got the new alternator and decided to cut back the plastic sheeting around the alternator wires to see how much damage then burned up diode had done.
i guess a lot of current while draining the battery can really produce some heat ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) so, now the $432 dollar question, is there a replacement harness for this or do i have to either get a complete new engine harness or try to replace each wire individually? they're pretty much burned all the way into the main harness. i cut out the worst, but the insulation where i cut them was still very hard and brittle, so i'm guessing the whole of the wires is toast ... this is on the 3.6L engine, btw. ... Whoah! That must have been exciting.
You would have to think that the entire wire is fried - it was probably carrying the same current along it's entire length. |

A new harness is probably expensive, but rebuilding the harness would take all day to do nice and clean (proper connectors, proper wires, proper sheathing). I vote buy.

I am interested in how your system is grounded? A 3.6 carries a significant amount of more amps than a type 4 motor does. Assuming your trans is grounded by the pre-requisite earth strap what about your front motor mount to chassis? Battery negative to chassis and case? It is apparent once the diode went an over-charge condition resulted in the melted insulation.

Looks like Rich Johnson is selling a nice new one on ebay. $250.
ebay I seem to remember that there was a recall on the 993 engine harness at some point because of fires. That could've been bad. |

Yipes Andy!
If the damage is not too bad, maybe a few wires/casing can be replaced easily enough. The Rich Johnson harness looks like a great deal if you are in a hurry. If you do replace it, would you donate it to me for 914 harness science? |

Here is a little more info. There was a recall on the engine harness for 95-96. The dealers had harneses (normally about $800.00) for $115.00 to be billed out for the recall cars. Must have been a bean counter deal. Andy, good job on the score. The recall harness is identical to a harness you would buy except the part # on the box should start with 000. Inside the box is the same harness though with the right part #....go figure
Here is the bulletin info. Those that have 3.6 engines can back-track the engine # to get the VIN number and ultimately see if your engine is suspect. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
