On teardown, noticed big area of leakage at the head to cylinder area. Is this normal for an old 2.0 or is something really bad going on in there?
Also, what telltale signs can you look for to see if the motor has ever been apart or rebuilt? thanks, dr Attached image(s) |

QUOTE(synthesisdv @ Mar 5 2004, 05:54 AM) Also, what telltale signs can you look for to see if the motor has ever been apart or rebuilt? RTV! the factory never used it, most DIY's can't resist it! (there should be a message in there, somewhere ...) |

Ha ! Looks like it had head leaks and some brain child thought that RTV would hold combustion!
Thats sweet! when you tear into it you'll see first hand why VW sent out a bulletin back in 1981 to get rid of the head gaskets... That one is going on my wall of shame! |

Thanks Jake,
I'm honored to be on your wall. Will it go next to the photo of the helicopter from your marine days? dr |

Nah, that pic was put there just for the video, to kind of blend in things a bit... It belongs in my office...
The wall of shame is just below my trophy shelf of exploded parts... |
