I've done 4 valve checks/adjustments, made sure my exhaust seals perfectly, and did all the routine tune up stuff like look for vacuum leaks and whatnot,
from here it seems like it might get a little more expensive to fix (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
I got this car a few weeks ago for a steal of a price so its not the end of the world for me if the engine needs work

I have attached a video to my post just click on the image, the hissing noise is coming from the K&N filter the PO put on, its the ticking i'm concerned about

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Kevin

(sorry about the vid the lens fogged up as soon as i got outside)

That's what I was thinking but i can't hunt it down. While it's running I can seal the tip and it will build pressure like you wouldn't believe.
Also I sealed the tip with a racquetball (when the engine was cool) and cut a hole in it, then ran compressed air into it and felt around the pipes. I didn't find any leaks.
I'm still at a loss,
Thanks again
Kevin

If your exhaust is not leaking, then it is a leak between head and top of one of the cylinders. It happened to me on a VW type 1 with a 1600 cc engine. Top of one of the cylinders was damaged, and the engine sounded like a flapping air pump. You might see it on a compression test.

I have fought that exact same problem for days. save yourself the time and install a couple new exhaust gaskets. also four of the eight bolts for the head are easy to get to under the rocker covers, you can double check those are tight. (and dont break and exhaust stud)

I agree on having a pro do the bolts and new exhaust gaskets into the heads.

I did so and my noises went away. He also adjusted the valves too, and I was stunned at how quiet it is.

As a sidenote, not relevant to the head exhaust gaskets leaking, then my banana muffler developed 4 leaks inside of it. Went to a Monza, but we cut the banana open to fix it.

This is a 38 year old original, but all kinds of leaks being fixed will make it quiet again.

But there is a chance that the heads do have a seal leak. We thought mine did, but maybe not so.

Without pulling the engine, you cannot tighten all the headbolts, but some guys can drop the engine in 2 hours or less.

Torquing the headbolts to spec could be the issue, but try the copper gaskets and have the pro do it. I tried 3 or 4 times and without a lift, it is too risky of something not seating right.

Good luck!

John
