(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I got a call from one of my wholesalers today...He told me of a place he knew of that was trying to sell a 1974 1.8 that had 45,000 miles...here's the catch: It was on a trailer being towed back to the owner after having new brakes and calipers put on, a tune up done, and a few other things when the trailer rolled over (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) . I called the place, and think I'll get up there tomorrow to see it. They say they have the title, and want $500 cash for the car. Does anyone remember hearing of a copper 914 ending up this way? They say the windshield frame and roll bar are wiped out, but the rest of the car was decent... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

Where is "up there"? Maybe I can check into it for you. (Or buy it if you don't want it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ).

Seriously, PM me. If I'm close I'd might be able to check it out for you...

I haven't heard of anything like that around here. Except for
the claim of 45000 miles, I would think something really wrong
with a shop towing a car AFTER being repaired. If they're
unloading it for so little, somebody probably got paid $$$$ out
of insurance. This car could be an absolute steal if it was
cared for before this. Seeing it would let you know really fast.

I could be available to help with this project too... or pay for some parts from it.

Can you imaging what the show would say if a dozen 914s showed up at one time to look at this thing?

I have a donor car we could cut the roof and roolbar from, weld it on to this car and boom, sell it to Hatch and Sons for a steal at 8k

Willing to donate the roof , winshield, etc if someone wants it.

Ok..here's all the news that's fit to print...

1. It's not copper, it was red. It was(is) a 74 1.8 with 45,000 miles..black (unchromed bumpers with perfect fog lights)

2. It has PERFECT tail light lenses and the best stamped steel wheels I've ever seen..

3.Here ends the good parts. It's unbelievable..'cause it's a complete car minus the roof, but there is nothing else that you wouldn't have to cut, drill, hammer, hack or blow out of the wreck...I mean it is a wreck...There isn't a straight panel left on the car( wait, I think the panel between the taillights is still straight.) The car was being transported back to the owner after a complete brake job and a tune up. The trouble started when the trailer passed the tow vehicle on 495 and headed for the trees. I know the trailer rolled at least once with the car on it, but I think the car then came off the trailer and rolled on it own. The sin here is that is a true 45k car. The battery mount is still intact, and completely solid. The floors are rust free ( bent, but rust free). Even the hell hole looked good from as far as I could pry the engine lid up.

The windsheild frame is almost touching the dash..the rollbar looks like someone pushed it over from the passenger side. If you walk straight back on the drivers side, you walk into the window seal on the roll bar. I guess I didn't hide my shock well, because the guy kept saying the engine and trans were still good, and the oil had just been changed during the tune up. He said it didn't leak any fluids..so I looked underneath.

Something the diameter of my leg hit the car(or the car hit it) on the passenger side. It crushed the pass logintudinal, and the valley it created goes almost completely across the car. The front engine bar is twisted up, and forward on the pass side and back on the drivers side. I can't tell if the engine is still held in by the bar or the fact the car was crushed around it. The engine lid, with rain tray on it, almost TOUCHES the top of the engine, it's pushed up that far. I pulled the dipstick, and the 2mm of oil I saw on the stick was absolutley fresh, so I believe the claim of the oil change ( the filter,way...way up there looks fresh too)

The passenger door is held on by one hinge, the bottom one having been ripped off. The dashboard is about a foot down from where it should be...

There isn't anything I wanted on this car...The guy never said.."Well, how about $200 or something?" I think he thinks he's sitting on the first 1.8 or something. I took his card, and I will pass it on to anyone who wants a good cry...He told me the car ahd to be gone by the fall..maybe if noone wants it..I'll see if I can get it from him at that time, but for now, I pass.

I couldn't bring myself to shoot any pics, it was like looking at a great waste.

If Joe D wants to look after seeing this post, I'll get you the info..if not,...anyone?

Eric,

Thank for the update. Yikes! It doesn't sound like there is much left intact. Did you get the impression that the engine and trans were actually OK? the description you give makes it hard to believe they're still intact? Since my car is a 1.8, perhaps I can salvage the engine wiring harnes, and some FI parts, for example.

Please send me the contact info, and I'll give it a look.

Ken, I don't need tail lights, so I'll let you know if I end up with a set.
