My car has been making some pretty scary noises lately. Sounds like a metal on metal rasping sound when the engine is at idle. I don't hear it when at speed though. When I try to locate the noise in the engine bay, it sounds like it's coming from the cooling fan/shroud area. The noise gets louder after the car has warmed up. Anybody have any ideas?

I had that happen once. It turned out to be a piece of engine tin about to fall off. It was rubbing on the alternator pulley. With the engine running, try to poke at various bits of engine tin around the front of the engine (with a stick so no fingers get munched) and see if you can make the sound worse.

I found what was causing the problem. It was really a simple fix too. I reached my hand around the area where the noise was coming from and found the alternator belt so I followed it around until I found something in contact with the pulley. Look what the P.O. left for me. Too bad it wasn't Craftsman or I'd get a new one free.

Trekkor found a piece of hose that had been riding in the fan itself since he bought the car.
