I gots oil comin' outta the place where the speedometer cable attaches. Not actually where it screws in but where the thingy goes into the tranny. I've tightened it at the housing but that doesn't seem to help and it swivels. I saw where an "O" ring is on the shaft via the Haynes manual pictures. Is this the seal that keeps the tranny fluid in?

The spedo angle screws into a housing. The housing mounts onto the tranny case. It is secured by a bolt. The housing contains an o-ring. However, it sounds like your leaking on the angle drive itself. Either replace the angle drive, or put some hylomar around it to keep it from leaking. Clean it off with some brake cleaner 1st. You'll be replacing your tranny fluid if you take it out. Try the hylomar 1st. Just a though. Brad recommended it to me. Seals things quite nicely.

You need to replace the angle drive. This is one of the signs it's going.

Mine does the same thing...but I am going to get rid of the stock speedo in the near future anyway, is there a way to plug this hole without buying a new angle drive?
Thanks, Tony |

Tony,
I dont know of a plug that it readily available. I have installed 5-6 new speedo angle drives.. THEY still leaked.. the end covers are wearing out from the constant rotation. It causes the speedo angle drive housing to slightly walk in the case (especially if that hold down screw has been stripped in the past) Goop it up with something. Goop the seal.. and goop the body of the angle drive. I have fought this and fought this... none of mine leak from there after the "gooping" Just gooped one last night for our fun run today. B |

My '73 2.0 has been leaking there since '99. I replaced the o'ring along time ago, now it leaks less - but it still drips a couple of drops every day. I just don't park in friends driveways... Cool, I'm try the goop. If it works - I'm gonna park in Mr. Picky's driveway asap & wait for the "fun" to start. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/alfred.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

I fixed mine with a new o-ring and a dab of Permatex Ultra Black. Not a drop for 2 years.

New O ring from PP and a bit of Loctite did it for me....not a drop more, but then sitting on jack stands is not the true test that the leak is fixed forever. |

Did the Hylomar thing..... tried a new "O" ring but the one I got was only a BCH too thick. Man, that clearance is tight (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) the "O" ring I picked up wasn't that much bigger than the original but it wouldn't even begin to go in. I used the original & put the hylomar on the last 1/2" of the drive after cleaning the barrel of the tranny where the angle drive slides into. Checked it after driving into town & nothing dripped (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) I thought the hylomar would set up... it was still gooey after 3 hours.... hope this is what it does. oh well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

That is the key: Hylomar doesnt setup. Neither does Dow Corning 730.
I found the same thing with the new o-rings... I ended up re-installing the old just like you did. I did force one up and inside only to have it leak BEFORE I dropped the car off the stands...LOL B |

I am about to tackle this on a an early 911. I think they are the same. According to PET there are two rubber seals involved. I have them both but have not taken it apart yet. Far more difficult than 914 because the trans. must be supported and the front mount bar dropped to pull the drive.

Yup (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) Das it exactly or, at least, what I used (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
I only put it on the last 1/2" of the angle drive cuz I didn't know if I should coat the whole thang like around the "O" ring. I went on a long hard drive yesterday & it started leakin a drop or 2. Maybe someone else can say how much to put on or how far into the drive it should be spread to (hopefully) stop the leak. .....b |
