The over lays fit right over what you now have.. almost undectable.
The last ones I used from BM where big steel plates that kinda welded over the top. I think BM's where more designed to help rusted sagging cars than they where for actual rust repair. I have some pics somewhere of both.. B |

My body guy keeps telling me I should use the overlays. He's referring to RD's units. He doesn't plan to repair rust with them, but he believes they will stiffen up the chassis. I'm thinking that it will just be another place for new rust to form.
You know how it is. There are two camps for long stiffening. I'm not certain that it's necessary as long as the chassis is solid. And mine will be when it's finished. But I want to see the options. |

I dont like the idea of trapping "anything" between the 2 pieces. I would rather see the rust happening under the "band aid". I like BM's pieces but I dont think I would ever use them (I sold the last set I had)

Brad's Kit They are not a stock looking lamination kit. They tie directly into the trailing arm mounting point. You have to remove an alignment shim to install them. Brad's is very detectable... but provides much more stiffness. -Rusty |

They also tie into the door sill, if you install them the way he recommends. -Rusty |

The only reason I like them over the BM pieces:
When I see BM pieces on a 914 tub.. it makes me IMEDIATELY think: "This car was a rusted piece of sh_t" .... not: "Oh, they where trying to strengthen the tub". My thoughts on this are usually echo'd by whomever I'm with looking at the car. You stand a chance of a very clean install with the RD pieces, and that would go unotticed by 90% of the 914 people out there. I like both kits.... but I'm concerned with what people think in the long run. (yes I know this car is a rusted POS, but your having it done correctly) The BM pieces feel like a cop out to actually using the proper pieces. My .02 B |

I called BM this morning to order but I have to wait a week so he can get more jack receivers. Hopefully I'll have a set in a couple weeks. When I do, I'll post pics of what the new version looks like.

I got an email yesterday from Bill at Restoration Designs. Great information and pictures of the RD overlays. He couldn't get the pics posted here so I wanted to post them.
QUOTE Mike, The guy restoring this car replaced the upper and lower wheel house panels P330 & P331 and the inner rocker panels P301L/R before installing the frame stiffening kit P346L/R. The original parts in these areas were stamped out of 18 gage steel .046 thick so when you add the kit which is also .046 you are then at .092 thick which is thicker than 16 gage steel which is .065 thick and as you know 16 gage is really not sheet metal but thin metal plate. I think the frame kit is a cleaner more elegant way to go about this type of modification because the car still looks original, and the kit does not interfere with reinstalling the step plates and outer rocker panels.
