I dont even care if its a replica, it is just sexy. 25000 seems like a good deal to me, but I live in reality, and I did not hit the lotto yet. But seriously, if I did get it, I am not sure if I would drive this one or the 914 more often (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I see them all the time at cars and coffee. Beautiful car, but it's a fiberglass Volkswagen bug. No comparison if you have a 914 especially if it's a six.

Look up rusty tubs.
He sells bodies for 3k or around there. Needs lots of time and effort, but those are free. |

Driven one, put a 2.7L T4 in it, went faster than snot out a farmers sneeze.
I'd love to drive a real one to see if it was any better in the shits and giggles department, but seeing as you wouldn't want to hammer it most likely not. That said I'd take a well sorted 914 or even a bug over a kit car, I just feel safer. BTW Some may remember I had a 356A coupe kit body for sale a couple years back, one of the better known kit car builders bought it to use as a plug. |

Funny you should start this thread cause I have been thinking of getting one of these kits myself.
I would love a real 356 but after thinking about it, I would be to afraid to drive it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) So a kit car for me would be great. Fiberglass work is no that hard for me, had done it years ago. |

Funny what mark said,
I have raced one and I would prefer a kit car with a big motor. A real speedster can't be modified to race competitively without someone shooting you...so a kit car in my opinion would be a lot more fun, and it looks the same. Rich |

If you look up the Augest’72 Car and Driver comparison test, the ’72 Karmann Ghia pretty much beat the ’56 Speedster in everything except the quarter mile. And VW had Bias tires and the Porsche had radials.

I'd like a 550 Spyder replica...with a Suby motor!!! That would be cool.

I parked beside a 550 Spyder replica at a show, damn thing sat barely half as high as the 914. I'm already paranoid of an SUV running me over me in the teen.

I have had two 356 replicas. A Beck and a Vintage. The Beck is better, but neither handle as good as my 914, which is why I now have a 914. I started pricing better suspension etc., but decided I would rather put my money in the car that handles better as stock. If you are a cruiser or a car show guy, they are fun. The most frequent question was, "it that a real one?" My answer, "yes it is real, touch it."

Love love love mine. it is a 2006 Vintage (you can tell by the interior/dash) with a mildly built 1915. I bought it with 680 miles two years ago. Not a sqeak or rattle. Drive it more than I do the 914. It's a bit nervous at higher speeds (75-80). It is my favorite car to drive in the fall for sure.
The top is fine in an emergency, but otherwise worthless. Fits good - just leaks like crazy at the side curtains (that you cant see out of) The only bummer is the gauges. They SUCK. The speedos fail frequently and the tach is there pretty much for looks (way off). Chinese junk. I bought a set of factory gauges, but the case diameter is significantly smaller than the after-market ones. The only realy option is to send them to North Hollywood and have the guts swapped out. FUN cars!! Attached image(s)

"Daddy - do you like the red trees, or the lellow ones?"
From my three year old last fall. Perfect day for a short drive with two perfect sets of pig tails - both strapped under the same seat belt (shhhhhh..... we just went around the block..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/busted_cop.gif) ). Doesnt get much better than that in my book. If you buy it, you wont be dissapointed! Attached thumbnail(s) |

Makes sense to have a car that is drivable all year round and can actually be parked in a public lot. I see real 356's out in the wild but only on sunny days for a short while.

Personally, I'm a fan of the replica's for the same reason I'd want a 914/6 conversion over a real one...
I would want to drive the crap out of it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) and I'd just feel wrong doing that to a real one at their current value. |
