I've done this before on one of my old beetles.

Of course, i didn't leave it like that, i simply used the old fender strips as a base to make a nice flare ...

That looks like an in progress pic, cuz the next step is to weld in sheet metal triangles to fill the gaps, then smooth & finish it. It's been used since at least the 1950's.

I actually results in a nice clean flare job, if done properly.
