Basically stock '74 2.0 w/djet. I bought the car 8 years ago and the PO had installed a Compufire unit. Rock solid reliable.

I don't mean to brag, but I've got electronic distributorless ignition, twin plug, managed by Megasquirt. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)
Oh who am I kidding? Of course I'm bragging. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) It's still pretty effin' cool. |

I've been using Pertronix for over 6 years in both my 914 and my VW Ghia when I had that. No issues whatsoever with the module. I think the main reason for going away from points was the quality of the points modules is terrible now. Bosch quality has really slipped in past years, it seems to be the trend lately.

'76 2.0 L stock DJet. I had three sets of points fail on me from different manufacturers...or at least suppliers/brands...by the cam follower wearing down quickly to where the points would no longer open significantly. I went with Pertronics Igniter II and even bought the hot coil, mostly because it was available from Pelican. The first set failed within 10 miles. It turned out to be the coil but I returned coil and module to Pelican for exchange with no problem. It was a bit of a pain because I was 800 miles from home, with 200 miles to go, on a cold, wet, Sunday evening and my only choice was to somehow get the failed points to open enough to run another 4 hours. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) The rubber grommet on the module is too big for the entry hole in the distributor and I had to substitute a smaller one nor would the connecters fit thru the hole so I had to snip those off and solder/crimp on replacements. But the new ones have worked fine for several months now and they definitely improve pulling out from a stop. I did call Pertronics about the oil filled coil. I had noted here on the forum that oil filled coils are not happy when installed horizontally as on 914s but fine vertically as on Bugs. That didn't make sense if, as I suspect, all these OEM Bosch coils are oil filled. The Pertronics rep said there is no problem as long as the poles are on a horizontal plane keeping the windings equally covered with oil. The poles should not be installed on a vertical plane. |

So, either everybody is running electronic OR everyone who runs electronic ignition reads and contributes to this forum.

So, either everybody is running electronic OR everyone who runs electronic ignition reads and contributes to this forum. Paul Maybe it is because nobody wants to buy a dwell meter? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) I'm running Pertronix, but it was installed by PO. I probably should have a spare set of points in the car for the eventual failure, but I probably won't. Instead, when it happens, I'll end up having the car towed home and ordering another Pertronix. I think people who have experienced immediate failure (or short lifetime duration) of electronic iginitions simply got unlucky. No company can produce a product (at a reasonable cost) without some failure rates. Companies in Georgia excluded. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) |
