Here is the company that sells the paint-on chrome system. I really think it's a great alternative with lots of flexibility.
I would like to get together a few people to split the cost and do a test batch. It's about $2000 for all the equipment. What Brandon and I are thinking is that we will do all the labor for free and anyone who wants to get in will split the cost of the machine. So if 5 people want in, it would be $400 each person to do their front and rear bumpers. The cores do not need to be perfect in any way. That would be $200 for each bumper if we can get 5 people. do you know if samples are available? it would be nice to get some pieces and test them by a few different methods.....I'm thinking that if you could get a few pieces in 4"x4" sheets, you could attach them to a vehicle to simulate actual use the front bumper will take more physical abuse from rocks and such, but how will the rear bumper fare with the exhaust just sitting a few inches away...for cars burning a little oil or running rich, will the residue just wipe off and not leave any stains? I read the test results but have nothing to compare those "pass" rating with.... it's expensive stuff, but it looks to be the real deal.... |

I'm calling tomorrow to see if we can get some samples. I was hoping to get enough people who are willing to take the risk. If the paint-on chrome does have some unexpected flaw you'll have a nice straight bumper that can be painted. Hell, I'll even spring for professionally applied* black automotive paint should any unexpected problems arise.

I had a wheel done with this process.
It looks like Chrome, It feels like Chrome. But it is soft and scratchs really easily. The wheel is for display so this is not a problem, if I mounted it on the car It would be all scratched up in no time. |

I had a wheel done would I use the stuff again. No its just not metal and is way to soft for any use that would have wear ie door handles or front bumpers.
It is great for a display product but not for something that is going to be used in the real world. |

What process was used? I've heard a LOT of bad things about competing processes. You could eat McDonalds for the first time and say hamburgers are gross. It's part of the process. The tests listed show a gravelometer test which is where they shoot gravel at the piece at 45 degree and 90 degree angles at high velocity. If it was soft and scratched easy it wouldn't be listed as a PASS! |

This stuff might be a bit cheaper and it's easily clear coated. I'm going to try to pick up the starter kit and do a few parts or a helmet.

I'd like to get started ASAP. As soon as enough people step up.
If you send bumpers you can send them grayhound and it's much cheaper. I think it's less than $50. If you send bumpers, send fog light grills and I'll do those too for the same price. The paint is a system so you need all the steps and a dust protected area in order to get good results. So it wouldn't be worth sending a little bit here or there. SAMPLES! They're sending me a sample, so I will be able to judge firsthand how this system works. I'll keep you posted. |

Wow, that's cool stuff. How heat resistant is it? If it could withstand 400 degrees, you could clear powdercoat on top of it.. that would toughen it up if it needs it.
I don't have the funds to be part of the trial group, but I'm curious how much the materials cost is. Once the equipment is paid for, will the materials and labor costs be cheaper than chrome? I would imagine the environmental impact would be less. If it's not cheaper than chrome, I would only forsee demand for unchromable parts like foglight grills and fiberglass bumpers. If you set up shop doing this, and the price was right, i would at least have you do my foglight grills. |
