Maybe it's not new, but I haven't seen it before.

I love the look of RSR Fuchs. But I can only afford Cookie Cutters right now. So I'm trying to make the best of it, and give the cookie cutters the best chance they will have at looking the part. It's a fun little project. Please let me know what you think.

Please note, these are just rough mock-ups at this stage, just to test the concept. If they look good, I will clean them up and paint them nicely. For now, they were just wiped down with a rag, masked, and sprayed. So please don't fret about poor masking, paint imperfections, or the minor curb rash.

Yes, my 4 year old and I were doing arts and crafts together.

I thought the wheel turned out pretty nice! But it wasn't quite what I was looking for. On this one, I painted the entire lip silver. But I understand that RSR wheels had the outside edge polished. So I decided to try that next:

On the second attempt, I masked the paint break just a bit further down the spoke, so that the silver section wouldn't look so thin. I also left the lip polished, which is hard to tell because these wheels had some nasty faded lips.

I'm pretty happy with where this is going!

This weekend, I am going to strip the silver paint off these two wheels, and polish the lips properly. Then I will mask and paint them properly.

I think both look great. It's hard to tell the polished lip in the pictures, but either way, they look really nice.

How did you prep the wheels?
What color silver?
Is the paint from a rattle can?

I have seen that done with bronze....pretty sharp. I am a huge cookie cutter fan myself.

We've all seen all black, and blacked out centers with polished lips, but I haven't seen this paint combo before. Looks good (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I like how you did the first wheel, silver painted recesses and lips, but also like the depth on the center on the second wheel.

One has plenty of options with paint. I'm currently working on a set of MBZ CLK wheels for my westy camper van (named 'Eileen'). Using Rustoleum "High Performance' wheel paint (just doing all silver though). There were too many lip knicks to warrant the $ to polish them, so I just filed them hand scotch-brighted them before painting.

Update!

I got the 4 wheels painted and done. But I did not polish the outermost lip of the wheels. I tried to do it, but I failed with the tools I had. First, I tried using paint remover to pull off the clearcoat, but the clearcoat was not cooperating. It came off in blotches, and left chunks of clearcoat all over the wheels. So then I resorted to sanding the clearcoat and trying to flatten it all out. It was a ton of work and enormously frustrating, because the clear would gum up the sandpaper constantly.

In the end, I just sanded them the best I could and simply painted the lips. I could have taken them to a polisher, or a sandblaster, or somewhere to dunk the wheels and have them stripped... but I didnt' really want to spend that kind of cash on this little project. For now, I compromised and just painted them. If I get myself a set of Fuchs, I will do it the right way. But this turned out alright, especially for a budget project!!

Here's my process:

1. First I painted the whole wheel silver, so that I could mask it all off and paint the black section on top. This seemed like it would be easier than trying to mask the black part of the spokes and the lip. I then used a piece of tape to mark the line where I wanted the paint break to be. I did this because you can't really see what you are masking when you are placing the tape on the top.

2. Next I placed a piece of tape on the end of the spoke, so that I would have a reference that is parallel to the edge of the spoke.

3. Now I could mask off the spokes. I started nearest the center, and rolled one single piece of tape all the way around. I used the piece of tape from step #2 as a reference, and kept my tape parallel to it. By rolling one piece of tape all the way around the spoke, i kept the paint break clean.

4. Once the spokes were all masked off, I used electrical tape to mask off the lip right at the peak. it took some practice to use several fingers to make the tape curve around the lip without stretching it so much that it wouldn't stick.

5. I then masked off the remainder of the center, and the remainder of the wheel lips:

I wrapped them in 225/50/15 tires, Falken Ziex 912 touring tires. But I could only afford 2 tires so far, so it'll be another week before I have 4 matching wheels. haha

It is a TIIIIGHT fit in the back, especially on the driver's side. But the 225s do fit, and my car is pretty low. I believe that the PO had rolled the fenders a bit, and the fender support bracket in front of the tires down by the rocker has been cut, so that the fenders could be pulled outwards.

The 16" Fuchs on the front of my car don't belong to me. They were just loaner wheels while I got my engine swap finished up. I'm going to return them to DBCooper as soon as I get my two front tires.

I've painted my bumpers the same color as the Cookie Cutters, with Rustoleum Satin Nickel spray paint. The black part of the wheels is Duplicolor Trim Black spray paint. It has maybe just a little bit more shine than I wanted, but I think that will fade down a bit with time. Overall, I am very happy with the wheels.

Are those 7" wheels in the rear? You said the tires are 225's. Are they 225x50's?

Yes, they are 15x7 wheels, and 225/50/15 Falken Ziex 912 tires.
