Rehabilitating '74 914.
Prior to this project, the front hood latch was difficult to release... much effort was needed to pull the cable to release the trunk. Have installed NEW latch cable. No kinks... everything looks fine. Still, much effort is needed to pull the cable.
Suggestions?

Is the cable sticky/hard to pull when it's disconnected from the latch? If not, the latch itself may be dirty/gummed up. It may need cleaning and fresh lube. Some folks put some lube (wd40) in the cable sheath as well.

Install a new rubber seal. That will help to create some pressure to help pop it up

If the cable is easy to move with the hood open, best guess is the latch is stiff or the hood is shutting too tight. . and a new seal may make it worse. . how are the hood bumpers adjusted???
Easy enough to remove the latch and clean and greased. .
Also if the release handle is stiff, it may need to the taken apart and cleaned and greased. .

IIRC they're threaded and spin in and out.
