AKA Synchros.

Most of the time you can swap them fifth onto first, first onto fifth, second onto fourth, fourth onto second.

Or if the investment doesn't bother you, about $350-400 for new bands on 1-2-3.

They have a rough darker surface, if they have a polished ring around them they are done. Good used is fine.

"Brake bands" aren't "syncros" They're the little curved pieces that transfer pressure inside the syncro rings. If they're not beat up at the ends, they're probably OK. If you decide to change them, do 'em in pairs, and be sure you have the right style. Early components (the whole set of 4 pieces) differ from the improved later versions, and you CANNOT mix-n-match. First gear syncro internals are different from the 2/3/4/5 internals.
