I have a 1975 914. Took it out this weekend and as I went to park on a hill, and felt the car slowly moving backwards after I pulled the parking brake. It worked out, I found a flat area to park in, and put it in gear so it wouldn't roll away.
However, I now have a parking brake that doesn't work.
Is there a single remedy to this, or will I need to have it looked at by a mechanic to figure out the issue?

it could be the cables, it could be the calipers, and it could be an adjustment needed on either or both...

the parking brakes need to be adjusted to work properly, they are not-self adjusting the way modern cars are.... or you may just need new pads or cables...

Aside from whatever is deficient in your parking brake system, when parking "up hill", the transmission should be in reverse. When parking "down hill", the transmission needs to be in first. Did you follow that procedure?

And your wheels should be turned to the right when parking on a downhill and the left on an uphill.

Thank you, Ill take it to a local brake guy for inspection.

I do put it in gear when on a hill to avoid rolling

Chock the right front wheel. Jack up the car on the drivers side. There are two cables, one for each rear wheel brake. Each cable has a two nuts near the firewall. You will need two wrenches to loosen the nuts. Adjust the nuts and take up any slack in the cables when the brake is off, then re-tighten. Check to make sure one of the cables is not broken. That would cause your problem as well. If you need a cable, PMB Performance has them (GEMO made in Germany)and the pin that holds the cable if it fell off the car like mine did.

I thought the rear pads had to be set to an exact specification? In that case a regular brake guy might not know this and you probably want to see a 914 specialist.
