I let my dad borrow my car during halloween trunk or treat. Apparently he didnt close the front hood well enough. Any suggestions or estimates on what it might cost to repair? What techniques might be used? I know i already need a front hood as it is warped in multiple places. Havent even had time to inspect the hinges.

Ouch! Glad to hear your father did not get hurt when the hood blocked his view.

I know the feeling. I had one fly up one time while towing. Broke my heart (so to speak). I guess the best way to fix it will be to weld in new cowl corners. I think I have some I will give you if it helps. PM me and I'll cut them out and mail to you, no charge. I have a couple hoods. But I'm in North Carolina. Shipping would be brutal. Ask Bruce if he has a good hood. He is in California.

Big job! windshield out, replace the cowl panel, hinges and hood. I would pull the gas tank to make it easy to pull the fresh air blower box and the wiper transmission.

Good point, it might be better to replace the whole cowl. Rick knows his stuff. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) rick is the man for repair advise. Maybe rick has a cowl from a car he's cutting up? |

Don't feel bad. I did the same thing 15 years ago. I smashed my windshield too.
Get a new hood, pound out and fix / replace the cowl, change the hinges if they are bent. I may have an extra hinge or two I can send you. |

Bummer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) At least he didn't wreck. Somewhere there is a bugeye sprite with a dent in the headlight module from my head! Punchin into a strong headwind on I-5 and the whole front end came over. Luckily I have a hard head.

After this happened to me, I pounded the bent corners flat, replaced the hinges, and drove with it looking not so good for 2 years. I doubt the hood was damaged. For a "real repair" you'll want metal from another car welded in to get that rain gutter good and everything back to "normal"
I recall the hinge bolt is an odd size, 14mm wrench Good luck (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

You could also repair the cowl find a fiberglass hood and go the hood-pin route. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Most unfortunate. I hope you get it all ironed out. Not the thing one would expect when letting a non owner drive a 914, it's usually something revolving around figgerin' out how to shift that pot of soup...
Might be a call out for all to check the safety catch on the hood release, I'm not sure why Potter's didn't come into play. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

I think you can get under that area with a dolly, can't you? Looks like the worst of it is on the drivers side... Might want to have a decent local body shop take a look, they might have some less costly ideas.... |

About 20 years ago I was building a wide body BMW 2002. I went to Cass' metal crafting shop with an air dam I was building looking to use his shrinker. He took a look at my part and asked..... You want to fix up that one, or you want to build a nice one? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) |

Rick when it gets cut out do they hide the weld inside the window seal area and grind it smooth? I assume at the factory they placed it all together multiple panels and stiched it together. Any insight to how it was assembled, may help disassemble and repair

Would this be the way to cut and weld back in?
