That's a hell of a lot of money for an untested engine. To me the trans is worth no more than a core. Untested the engine is just a core as well IMO.

For $4-5k you can often find a complete, running, leak-down tested 3.0 engine. I almost bought one when I started my project rebuild. In retrospect I could have got a 3.2 for less than what I have into my 3.0, but at least I know my engine is fresh.

What year 3.0 can you get for $5K?

The one I almost bought for $4K (plus shipping) was a 80's euro engine, so it was a higher compression bigport. Long gone by now as that was 3+ years ago.
They're out there.

Not nearly as much as 3 years ago. As the price of cars has gone up, so have the decent engines...

On TheSamba:

FS- 1970 Porsche 911T Engine and Transmission Price: $5500
2.2 liter T engine and 5-speed trans, complete with starter, minus exhaust. Type number 911/07 (1970 T for USA/CDN). Serial number 6105110 (110th built). Unknown internal condition of engine or transmission although the donor car ran and drove in, and as such both should be considered needing to be rebuilt.

I have checked the transmission and it does shift through all gears just fine. Engine turns freely by hand.

2.2L on TheSamba
