Been working on the car and sorting out issues. New shifter parts, brake parts showed up from Pelican today. I haven't even driven the car yet with the stock 2.0 and I'm already thinking about how fun the car would be with more HP. I'm not into slow cars. LOL !!! As I said I have made good HP with a type one motor and the type four is new to me. What is the word on HP. I've seen reference to Raby's 2.9 and I have the Hot VWs performance mag with his 2270 build up in it. Give me the low down on Raby HP.

Thanks guys

Most of us can't afford a Raby engine or wait long enough to get one.

And we can't follow all the rules for usage afterwards either.

IMHO making the move from stock 2.0 to 2056 is a very reliable and fairly cheap way to make a seat of the pants difference. No one will run off and leave you in the curves (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Then you can get another 10% with properly machined heads and another 5% with headers/exhaust and on and on...LOL

Good Luck on your Journey....and

And Mike B and Skatty...It would be Tires/Suspension/Torque NOT HP that would get me in the curves. Mike hasn't seen me drive have you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) and The Messerschmitt looking 44 didn't get out of site (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) But is prone to getting tickets in the straights (IMG:style_emoticons/default/slap.gif)

The Suby conversion is popular with people who like to have their car on jack stands and enjoy cutting sheet-metal. There is a population for whom this describes their 914 ownership. They are bold and wonderful people. Not everyone is like that.
If you are able/willing to drop the motor but not go that far, the Raby motors are a great value. Even if you had to pay a shop to do the engine install, they are still a bargain compared to the time and cost to have a shop do a Suby conversion.
If you want a Suby conversion, wait and buy an abandoned project or a completed car. If you want power, soon, in a 914, try this http://www.originalcustoms.com/engines.php
If you can wait and want more power and have the money, then the decision becomes more complicated (Porsche 6, big 4, Rotary, Subaru, v8, Corsair etc) and you need to get searching/googling.
Good luck!

Or just pay the bucks and put in a reliable Porsche -6 as God and Dr. Porsche had intended!

Actually, it's your car to do with as you please, but you'll be many dollars ahead to purchase someone else's completed project. An LS engined car would probably give you the straight line thrill you seem to want. A Raby engined car will be quick and lighter. Take your choice.

You realize that Jake now charges around $20-22K for his engines. Calling them a bargain is a stretch.

I think a 2056 with proper cam, heads, etc will get 130+hp.
Jake advertises a couple 2270 builds good for 155 and 170 hp with gobs of torque.

I have a 2316 with carbs. It is a beautiful motor. Very smooth and makes nice power and lots of torque. If you can afford it, I think it is the best motor for the 914. It keeps the car light and handling like it should, but keep in mind it is not just the motor. All the accessories add up too. It is not an inexpensive endeavor. Good luck.

My 2270 from Jake peaked at 170 HP and that was before I put the tangerine EVO headers & muffler on it.

150-180 is a decent street motor that you can build with some research, and putting the right amount of money into the heads.

Higher than that, you end up having to rev it too high to enjoy street driving.

A stroked crankshaft, with big Pistons and the right heads is the way to go.

You can buy this already built from Jake, FAT, and a few other west coast builders.
You can also do more research into how to get the heads flowing well enough to support what you goals might be.

For me, I would leverage the hard work and testing the Jake and Len have done on the heads and buy those heads, pick you version, and then build up everything else like a stroked crank and larger Pistons and cylinders...all simple enough to find.

Do be cautious with the parts you buy, many of them are not up to the quality you need to really get the job done, so measure everything, make sure the cylinders are round, they are the right length, they are machined properly at the base and top to fit.....send them back if they are not done right and find parts that are done correctly.

You might also want to look at FAT Performance here on the left coast in SoCal -

http://fatperformance.com/home/?page_id=51

The owner Ron is easy to work with, happy to give a shop tour & will walk you thru what you need for what you want your T4 to do. All things that I hear Jake Raby has moved away from as he's going more to the newer Porsche waterboxer 6 motors.

Ron has long & extensive experience & many T4 Baja 500 & 1000 winners to his shop's credit.

Have Fun!
Tom
