Those men and women who served in WWII gave way more than we do these days. They were often ill equiped and away from families for years, not to mention much higher casualty rates. Today we have Skype, satellite phones and the internet to stay in touch during 9-12 month deployments, not just letters that may never make it across the ocean. I have incredible respect for those who served before me, and make it my duty to make my young Soldiers understand this.

I wont forget. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

Hickam Field is where my Dad helped deliver his crew by the grace of God.

Christmas Day will be the release of Unbroken. For all my life WWII epics have been about B17s, Normandy, Iwo Jima, Pearl Harbor, and everything EXCEPT what my Dad did.

Unbroken pretty much covers it all, from B-24s, to PTSD, to alcohol, to survival.

I plan to go see it on Christmas Day.

Visited the memorial a few years back. There are few places to visit and still see and feel the effects of WWII today. This is one of them.

Everyone should go at least once. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/flag.gif)

My local newspaper (remember those..) did not have a SINGLE mention of Pearl Harbor. A letter to the editor went in before I finished my coffee.

In memory of my father in law, Paul Egan, who survived the USS Arizona, and helped rescue
some of his shipmates. . He is now interred in the hull with those who were less fortunate. RIP.

Different theater but the damage was done.
All the neighbors were vets, one from the Boer War,a tall fragile man of great age.
Still had a blue spark in his eyes.Very fortunate to have survived, damaged by horror.
A moment.

Absolutely remembered. Always thankful to the great men & women who ensure the many things I hold dear. Thank you is not enough

Years ago when I had my pizza parlor. I was looking at ways to decorate & do something different. There was a local guy who did documentaries. Specifically on WW2 & their Air Veterans. After seeing some of the things he was working on. I asked if he could give me a write up for each table. A tribute to any airman in WW2. We ended up with a very nice write up for each table with pictures. When we unveiled the room we had a dozen of these Veterans who's pictures were on the wall who were still alive & came with their families. I had many items donated pertaining to WW2 & many model planes that hung from the ceilings. It was very humbling to meet these men & see them with their families. I was very pleased to see the job my guy did on each tribute. Everyone there was thrilled with the room & how it was done. I was blown away with the patriotism in my pizza parlor that day. Truly a day I will treasure the rest of my life.

This one got to me just now.
Tear.
A neighbor as a kid and a few years ago a kid in his 20's from Kitchener (astan).
The kid was a real tough mother by the way, that woudn't stop him.
Didn't.

Memories only fade if we let them...

Thanks Dad! WWII Vet
His Father passed when he was two
Survived the Great Depression
Never set foot out of his little hometown until-
Enlisted the day after graduating from HS age 17, to fly B-17's and B-24's in the Army Air Corp. After the war served as a flight instructor
Rode an Indian
Landed a broken piper on a football field
Became a Steam Locomotive Engineer while going to college.
Then turned 21.

Probably representative of that generation (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

Funny how he never talked about this stuff. To me it was amazing. To him it was just Tuesday.

Yep. I didn't know anything about my Dads time in WWII until after he died. He never mentioned being there. He would talk about before and after. I questioned if he really was there. Then we got his picture in front of his B24 after he died, then I linked it to a website, then I talked to the pilot of his crew, and now I know much more about the whys and how's of his epic life. My life is nothing compared to his.

Late into his 70's the dreams and nightmares still haunted him, he wouldn't tell us about his nightmares but i found out after he died it was abiut the Japanese and his crew. And then there was alcohol. Add this to manic depression. Yet, he was a wonderful father, bright, passionate, and hard working. In 1977, he bought my 914 which he picked me up with on Saturdays.

He was fearless, not by force or attitude, but by the intimate understanding that life was very precious, should not be wasted, and to experience each day as if it were your last. That's right, live today as if it were your last. He loved the 914 and drove it 90 mph + with me every now and again firmly depositing a thrill and need in a young kids mind.

He did things that few would - not like jump the grand canyon on a motorcycle, but more like digging a basement under the house without a permit, or driving through missile silos at VAFB. He was a conversationalist about anything and could flip on a dime, but he never talked about WWII or his first wife who died on new years eve leaving him with 3 young daughters.

This is why Unbroken means so much to me. If the movie does the book, people will catch a glimpse of what it really means to be someone of character.

Don't forget Pearl Harbor or for that matter Afghanistan. Better yet, military or not, be a man of character and do what is right. Moreso, be fearless and passionate in life. Lastly, get your car off jackstands and DRIVE.
