I need a new thermostat. The old bellows type are available but there is a new type which is cheaper. I dont see the need to fork out extra $ on the bellows if the new one is good
Old Bellows
New type

Anyone had any experience?

my understanding is the new one fails with flaps closed which reduces the airflow through the oil cooler. the old style fail open so the air through the oil cooler.

so I would go with the old style.

When the old type bellows thermostat fails, it fails in the open position with the cooling flaps open so your engine doesn't overheat.

From what I have read, when the new non-bellows types fail, they fail in the closed position with the cooling flaps closed. If this happens while driving, your engine can overheat.

This is only what I have read. Someone with 1st hand experience with these new thermostats might want to chime in.

I would not buy from that guy on the Samba, He often has huge lead times and when i called him was extremely rude and hung up on me.
I forgot where i got mine from, i can dig it up but they shipped mine next day. Functions properly.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I did as well and it's solid. Wasted my money on a used one (that had failed) from a guy on Samba before going with this vendor.

The one I got on Samba was not from Awesome Powdercoat (although they advertise there). It was just some random dude in the classifieds selling a used thermostat and cable. When I realized that one was already trash I then went to Awesome Powdercoat and did it right.

I agree. It has been a while, but doesn't he take your core and save you a few bucks?

I bought from Awesome powdercoat, took 2 months to get the part as he builds in batches. Looks great, seems to work (with blowdryer)

You could use heated water on the stove and a thermometer to test the function.
