I have a 1970 4 with exchangers but no heat hooked up and no plans for it. Dual Weber 40IDFs and cam.
I currently have a Bursch type exhaust. It's really loud. I like loud but this sounds bad. And I want smoother, deeper sounds. Also i get an enormous amount of heat in the rear.

Finding an inexpensive header seems impossible. So wondering if anyone has done a setup similar to this.

Use the J pipes from a late model and turn them around....attach turbomufflers or magnas and then route the pipe out the back.

Would this kill any torque or power I have? Would it be quieter?

I don't know about what you describe but the Magnaflow muffler makes the Bursch a lot quieter and is a simple mod. Did mine with a hacksaw and 2 muffler clamps in about 20 minutes. there's a thread on it here somewhere

You mean replace the one on there? That could work..it would have to fit and still be better than what's on there. Don't know the size of the pipes. Do they slide on and clamp? Can't weld.

Can't find any local muffler guy that wants to work on my car...so have to do it myself.

Here is my setup, but I really like the port hole valance, but not the tiny pipe. This car sounds nothing like any VW engine you will ever here. It is very unique.

STIG's setup looks awesome. I simply hacksawed the Bursch muffler off and installed Summit Racing PN MPE-11124 with clamps. No welding required. The clamps don't show.

Did you have to remove the bursch or were you able to do it on the car with the valance off?

Joining the two pipes on one side together is one of two things (IMHO) that kills the power in the 75-76 2.0 cars. (95 DIN HP, down to 88 DIN HP.) The other is the tight 180-degree bend just after the F-shaped downpipes.

I've heard one car with the F-pipes and straight pipes back to Supertrapps. To my ears, it sounded simply awful. I've tried to block it out of my memory, frankly.

If you're designing your own exhaust, join the pipes properly! Or, since you say you can't weld, pony up the $$ to have someone design and build one for you, or get one of Tangerine Racing's mobile works of art.

I had a 2.0l with a Bursch header and a Flowmaster muffler that had a pretty unique rumble. Got a lot of compliments on the way that car sounded...

I think the best solution is a v8. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I've had this one on my car for 11 years. Nice sound, tuned exhaust, reasonable cost. https://www.gt-racing.com/products-page/eur...art-914-4-158h/

I removed the Bursch to replace the muffler. It would be hard to cut the old one off with the bursch installed unless maybe you have a sawzall.

well it turns out i have what i think is the Sebring exhaust. The four tube collector is pointing straight back not turned like on a Bursch. Not sure if that changes anything.

Anyone know know the pipe size diameter that goes in and out of the muffler?

Here's what was on my 76 when i got it, wasn't running, now removed so i can have heat, never heard the sound,
BTW they're available cheap.

Hey, I was the one who started that topic and I ended up using the Stig's design on a Kerry Hunter header. I actually tested it on a dyno and gained about 10 HP over the Supertrap the KH header came with. I am very happy with the sound (not too loud), performance and look of the system.

So I decided to keep the Sebring tubing and replace the muffler. I dropped the whole unit out of the car.

For record: Tube is 2" diameter

For the hell of it I started it up with open exchangers...wow what a sound....like a v8 with zoomies!

It revs so smoothly now...kinda thinking this old muffler is more of a choker.

I ordered this and picking it up tonight...then off to the local muffler shop to see if he will touch it.

......what's the easiest way to strip of flaky heat paint that didn't hold up?
