I decide to do a compression test since I am going through so much oil.
I warmed car up to about 1/4 on gauge would not go higher sitting on cold day. Petal to floor cranked 5-6 times. 1.Standard compression test cylinder 1 =110 PSI. 2. added a bit of oil cylinder 1 same test 150 PSI. Thats all i did. Seems like rings as was suggested earlier when discussing my oil usage earlier post.??? If rings are there any sort of cheap solutions.???. Car has 100,000 miles on it roughly. Thanks for any suggestions. Money is a issue. Although I am sure just like everything else, once you go to fix 1 problem on a 914,you always end up finding a few more. Car runs great, but using a lot of oil. Grant |

If you use a quart in 500 miles, it's time to rebuild. That's not to say it won't run OK though.

If you use a quart in 500 miles, it's time to rebuild. That's not to say it won't run OK though. I am using a quart every couple hundred miles. I use Bradd Penn 20/50 I think. What is a rebuild,is there a kit?? NOT GOOD NEWS. what you need on a rebuild depends on what was worn in your engine. You can probably do a top end rebuild. This means sending the heads off to have them rebuilt. Honing the cylinders (if they are still serviceable) Probably new pistons. Definitely new rings. All your money will go into the heads. Its not a job you want to do at home unless you know what you are doing. Zach |

After reading this interesting tread, here's my.02 cents.
With 100,000 miles on the motor and if your only going to do a top end refresh. Its like taking a shower and putting back on the same shorts and possible t shirt. Point is, split the case and refresh everything. |

It also boils down to getting screwed by local shops that dont know shit about a 1.8L motor. I am prepared to spend a bit of money, but not so someone can practice there rebuild skills on my car. If I lived in the USA I would at least have some options from the forum experts. Thanks Grant |
