Hi Everyone,

I am being taxed as if I have a 2.0 when I really have a 1.7. So, I need to "prove it" to our state govt. Is there anywhere on the car that lists the engine size? I checked the door jam info and it wasn't listed there, the engine compartment and found nothing. Any other ideas?

Thank you for any help,

Ross

COA. If it's originally a 1.7, the COA will say so. However, I can't imagine the tax being that much different... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

You can also look for the case no. - see Jeff's Group E near the end for the 2.0, vs. 1.7 & 1.8 ....

http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/PLM.htm

PS - Find your engine case number & snap a pic to send to them, alonmg with the engine code info. from Jeff's Model number page -

http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/ModelNumbers.htm < If you happen to have the original window sticker, dealer sales invoice (new) &/or the service book (if they bothered to add model number therein) - then you can also use those documents. Just the VIN tells you nothing. Engine case codes are also in the 914 Info section of this site (see top of page) to add as documentation of the 1.7 case code.

Good Luck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Your state taxes by engine displacement on classic cars?
Sheesh. Seems like a red tape nightmare.

Rob,

He's probably being taxed based on purchase or appraised value of a 2L vs 1.7/1.8 - which could be significantly more value as a 2.0!

However, I am surprised that any state's DMV &/or taxing authority would be up enough on 914s to even know to check on the difference! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

What year is your car. They were probably using the -6 displacement of 2.0 as their reference point. If that's the case, it will be easy to prove you have a -4 and not a -6.

Marc brings up a valid point. What year is your car? Prior to 73 the only 2.0s were sixes

hmmm, that's interesting. It is a 72. I am going to call the DMV back and do a little more research.

1.7 was the only engine offered in '72.

well the DMV was nice enough to tell me that the number of cylinders doesn't matter only the engine size. I am going to have to get them proof that it is a 1.7. The good news for me (according to the DMV) is that my car has either doubled or quadruped in value since 9 months ago. -sarcasm

Thanks again for everyone's help

Well that kind of explains it. The rarest of 914-6 models were 1972 model year. 237 of them! Where is Dave Darling when you need him. I recall they had the 914-4 steering column instead of the dash mounted ignition key.
They're just reaching deep in your pocket assuming you have one of the 237. If you did, it wouldn't be out of the question for it to be 4 times the value or more. Things to know, the 72MY 914-6 were probably built in 71.

They are full of BS. That car only came with a 1.7; the owner's manual should suffice for proof.

Yes, the owners manual may be all you need. Your car is a '72 four cylinder, and all fours in that year were 1.7, and all 2.0 were sixes. Of course, that assumes the DMV people can count...

Call the DMV again. You'll probably get a different person and maybe, just maybe, they'd be able to empty a glass if the instructions were written on the bottom. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Find, or take, a picture of another 914 that has on the rear the 1.7 insignia between the tail lights and take the picture to the DMV. Might need to color match the cars and not have a license plate on the car when you find the picture you need.

This is why I like Connecticut's gig where all cars on "classic" plates are assessed at $500 for tax purposes. Yes, even a Ferrari F40.

Why don't you ask THEM what they want to see for proof...?

OK, might be moving to NC is a few years.
Is this for a car not previously registered in state?
Aren't they taxed (registration fees) at the bill of sale value?

What an I in for?

Do not do as suggested above re the picture of another car and changing the color, etc. We call that Fraud; it is a felony in CA. The DMV asshats have nothing better to do than investigate and prosecute cases like that. My free 2 cents for your consideration.
