here's a few pic's of some parts I've been working on
1700 heads I've modified at work, from this to this (machined step & groove), chamber porting was done at home , needed more cc (61) to get compression down custom 100mm JE pistons ( thank you Charles @ LN engineering) machined piston crown pocket (9cc) |

You say you are increasing the CC to DECREASE the static compression ratio ... what are you shooting for that would need such positive sealing? Or...power adder? |

Here's a few more details ( parts that I have acquired )
2.5t litre ( t = turbo ) 100mm nickies with custom machined groove custom JE pistons ( .300 crown, allowing for .150-.200 protrusion out cylinder into chamber ) 80mm chevy journal 4340 forged crank cb 5.325 h-beam rods chevy journal raceware long studs 1700 W case (decked ,machined for cylinders, drilled for 1/2" bolts ,& a few other mods ) 1/2 case bolts 1700 heads with 42x36 ss valves (vw650 springs & ti retainers) plus machined step groove between cyl. & head 9.2 to 1 c.r. (61cc chambers with 9cc dish in piston ) with .038 deck pauter cam K8O3 on 110* LC, in. 288* adv. /255@.050 x .384 lobe lift , ex.296* adv. /268@.050 x .398 lobe lift type 4 rockers 1.3 with porsche adj. on order from KEP (kennedy engineered products) 228mm twin disc system with organic pads for streetable use 1-7/8 4-2-1 CFR Tangerine exaust , will modify with flange coupling for turbo ( its probably to big but its what I have to work with ,its on my running 2.8 ) putting together a HORIZONTAL fan shroud system (I picked up a incomplete kit ) extra set of cb 48mm throttle bodies with hats megasquirt2 exta inj & ign. (running in car on 2.8 twinplug) I also have a cb quicktune system & a mallory unilite distributor (lockable) still need turbocharger (trying to FIGURE out which one) water meth injection air to air intercooler plus more I cant think of this is my first attempt at a turbo motor so I'm sure I'll make a few mistakes along the way , my plan is low boost with 9to1 cr , along with the small ports on the 1700 heads allowing for snappier throttle response maybe quicker spool ? |

I got the pistons back from Swain Tech coatings ( http://swaintech.com/race-coatings/automot...gs-price-sheet/ )
I had the skirts recoated with PC-9 & the tops coated with TBC |

Here's a few pic's of the flywheel clutch & pressure plate ( 228mm twin disc )
Kennedy Engineering ( www.kennedyeng.com/clutches ) it's a little on the heavy side , but that's ok , the small intake ports & cam I'm using I think it'll still be snappy , thanks for looking Bill D. we were going to do the discs with organic material , but he could not make them thin enough , 215mm single disc PP on left & 228mm twin disc PP on right |

Spooling.... Please wait Group: Members Posts: 13,376 Joined: 20-January 03 From: Riverbank, Ca Member No.: 172 Region Association: Northern California |
Awesome! Love turbos! What kind of power and boost pressures are you looking to run? I might be able to help with sizing. If your looking for full boost by say 2500 rpms you'll need to stick with a relatively small turbo, but you won't get the power out of it your looking for big numbers. 2.5 L is nice and should help with spool. I am a big proponent of go bigger turbo than you need and adjust boost pressure giving you headroom. It also helps keep IATs low if you go big turbo low boost.
The biggest thing you need to know is what kind of power you want to run and on what type of fuel. If you have E85 readily available then you should run that. Also If you can fit it I would go air to water intercooler. That's what I have and it works really well. Not sure lot of room in a 914 for an air to air. Meth does help a lot. Please note I don't have much T4 knowledge but a good amount of turbo knowledge. |

Thanks for taking us along. Love the look of the machined parts. Great start. I had a turbo 2.0 back in 79 and loved it. Interested to see what you are going to do for an exhaust. Bellows are your friend. Red hot exhaust under boost can bend most Stainless-Steel exhausts.

I like where this is going. Check my thread linked below on my turbo adventures. If not for that infinity shift while tuning... I still have the top mount intercooler with fan and shroud set up. In my perfect world I would have built another motor after testing theories on that one, using LN barrels, and a flat fan, just as you are doing. I was wondering if with that set up I could duct or partially duct the fan to pull thru the intercooler. But my results with the IC set up I had were so good, I pulled back off that idea of ducting the cooling air thru the IC.
I was infatuated with the idea of a rear mount turbo, to keep the turbo heat away from the engine as much as possible. I ran the turbo charge air horizontally under the rear trunk and thru the back engine tin. That horizontal run would have been a perfect spot for a "sausage" style air to water intercooler if I wanted to do that. I would have mounted the radiator across the back of the car where the factory muffler went. The pump would have mounted on the plate I made that fit on the back of the trans to locate the oil pump that got the oil back up and into the engine. Just some more thoughts to kick around. Keep us updated. |

Please note I don't have much T4 knowledge but a good amount of turbo knowledge. Thank you , Yes I could use some help on input on choosing a turbo , I'm trying to understand the AR sizing numbers , I'm thinking something like 60 compressor 67 turbine ?,maybe both little bigger ?,if I'm thinking correctly, bigger turbine then compressor ,will help with less heat, maybe I got this wrong ? the turbo will be in the back , I have a 1 7/8 CFR tangerine system, it's what have on my 2.8 , I want to start with low boost (7 lbs ) with the option to go a little higher (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) , they say it's addictive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) , at the moment the CR is 9.2 to 1 , I plan on an air to air intercooler in the engine compartment above the horizontal fan , along with water meth system , I still have to see how much space I'll have & need ,I might have to go water air for space purposes , I also have E85 available at few stations nearby ,so that is another addable option, I plan on a BOV (blow off valve) along with a waste gate , as per hp & torque I don't know ? I will wait an be surprised (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I'm also running a GT engine lid , thank you Bill D. here's a pic of the tangerine exhaust header |

Would love to have one of those Hardinge lathes at home...I think we have about 20 at work...I'd also take a Monarch EE lathe at home! Proposed HP level you are shooting for? What are you doing for fuel and ignition? |

As far as HP, 250 I would be happy ,300 would make me happyhappy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) , any more than that I dont think would be as much fun , besides I would prefer torque over HP ,this is a weekend hot rod & not a race car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) As for fuel & spark , I'm running a MS2 xtra with sequential fuel & ign. on my 2.8 twin plug it's supposed to have a map daddy ? installed I also have a CB Quicktune efi with boost map sensor & a mallory unilite , that can be locked, old school (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) , thank you Bill D. |

Hasn't anyone told you that you can't turbo a T4? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)
Loving the work so far, as an amateur machinist/mechanic/engine builder I'm looking forward to progress on this thread. I have no helpful input for you but will be reading along and trying to learn what I can. Good luck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |
