You gotta pay to play. It was no surprise. I knew it was coming.
Elvira had started smoking on decel a couple of years ago. The oil puddle was growing into a small pond, and now coming from both sides. I thought the car was running great, but a leak down test showed that I was not getting all the 3.0 was capable of.

It was time for a rebuild. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) (I now under$tand why $ome guy$ choo$e a $uby $wap.)

Brant at Carl's Place is doing the work.

Nothing unexpected was found in the tear down.
The worst was some pitting on many of the cam lobes.
I had also managed to *kiss* a couple of the exhaust valves.
(I am glad I only need 24 of those 993 Head Studs.)

I like to see a mechanic with clean work bench (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) So when will Elvira hit the road again? Does this mean she will be at RT66 2019? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

So when will Elvira hit the road again? :

I'm not sure when Elvira will be back home again. They didn't say. I didn't ask. I am not really in a big hurry.
It will be to hot here to enjoy anything except a sunrise drive for the next 2 months.
I know it will be difficult to restrain myself during the break in period.
I am certainly not looking foreward to settling the bill.

No kidding. I left Vegas Wednesday morning at 112*. By the time I reached the desert north of Vegas on 95N, it had dropped 10*. I picked up Nicho at McCarren at 3am Wednesday and it was STILL 89*.

John’s right. You don’t want to go out if you don’t have to. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Stock rebuild or an upgrade here and there?

I have always had questions about my motors internals. I thought is ran excellent and suspected it might have some upgrades. Teardown revealed that everything was stock.
I was seriously considering 964 cams after I was shown the pitted lobes on mine. The shop owner offered me a pair of stock cams at the best price possible (free) and the choice was clear.
I am confident that a fresh, tight 3 liter will be enough to maintain my permagrin. Besides, even if I doubled the cost of the build, the 914 would still be my slow Porsche. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)
