About to reinstall engine and the original flywheel was
cut 0.025". The as found spacer washer under the clutch fork pivot ball is 0.060" thick. This 0.060" thickness was also found on 2 other 914 transmission we have, so we are assuming this was the standard factory washer thickness used with a new uncut flywheel. Searching seems to indicate that an additional washer of 0.025" needs to be added to the 0.060" washer under the pivot ball to maintain the geometry. Can we get confirmation that this is correct. If not then what if anything is to be done to compensate for the flywheel being cut? Also have others found the original washer was indeed 0.060" Thanks jjs3rd914 |

There was no washer originally, you can only add so much washer before the bolt runs out of thread.
I'd say you're about at the limit. |

Add up to two regular washers. If that does not solve it, then your flywheel is done. There is a washer in all of them stock, #3 in the PET file. Attached image(s)

I have never measured, I always just test fit the trans and shim the pivot ball to bring the clutch fork as close to the engine case as possible without hitting. I have found it to make a huge difference in clutch feel. If when assembled I can slide the tip of my pinky between the clutch fork and the engine case its to much clearance. The least amount of clearance you can get without over shimming the pivot ball the better.

I wish I had measured the finished thickness but I got the idea from Forresthaag who said he used and suggested a dime. Had to reduce diameter but that is what I did and it seems to work fine. Hope this helps. Just measured a random dime and it was .046

I found with my clutch adjusted I got gear clash some times ,found clutch release arm had been hitting the gearbox case, pulled the box and modified a cheap socket to undo the ball pivot, fitted a 1mm washer and that sorted it,found flywheel had been resurfaced but still up to spec .
Didn't fix the other issue my gearbox has (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) . |

Thanks to all so far.
So I am going to go with what I posted. I thus am assuming that since 3 trannies I had all had the .060" washer under them that they were there from the factory. And having cut the flywheel the .025" I will add that. As Lucky9146 pointed out the thickness of a dime is .046" or so, close enough to the .060, and the 8mm wavy washer is .025", then that is what I will go with the two of them. If others have info to offer please do. Thanks jjs3rd914 |
