I've decided I'd like to secure the spare tire cover in the front trunk so it doesn't move around. It seems a bit loose and I want to keep it from moving while driving into turns and over bumps, etc.

I am planning on bolting it to the spare tire with a long bolt going thru one of the wheel nut holes, thru a hole in the cover and a wing nut. But, before I do, I thought I'd see if there were others who had done it and see what they did.

I'd like the spare tire to be bolted separately; in other words, I want to be able to lift up the cover without undoing the bolt that holds the tire in place. I store stuff under it.

I'm making a new cover out of 5/8" plywood (it was free and I want something thicker than stock so it doesn't bend) and I'm not planning on adding any carpet. I'm just going to paint it black.

Have you considered using small patches of heavy duty velcro in the corners? It shouldn't take much to secure the cover and would still allow removal without unbolting anything. Just a thought...

It's not going anywhere in a street car...unless you are upside down

If in a track car....it and the spare are weight....remove them

The carpet actually helps it stay in place and not shift around

Is this real? I've never heard of this problem. Just tank it or remove it. Racers obviously don't carry them. What is your issue??? And pooleeeezzzzzz stop with the random bolts.

I have an industrial design background so I'm often finding ways to make improvements. Not sure why this wasn't done originally; maybe it was a cost consideration. Here is the finished product:Attached Image
It rests on the spare. I have a bolt going thru one of the bolt holes on the tire thru an aluminum plate bolted to the back of the cover. The wing nut tightens it down. I carry a tool box so the red straps are for securing the tool box to the cover. It works, so I thought I'd share.

Years ago, I made a cooler to fit in the front trunk: used an A/C cover from a 914, cut a hole in the spare tire cover board, and ran a drain line out the bottom. There was always a cold-one up front... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif)

post a pic of your trunk floor...there shoiuld be a very adequate factory mount...unless your 914 had AC..

The factory mount holds the spare tire. I made something to hold the cover to the spare. I wanted them separate so when I unbolted the bolt that holds the cover down, the spare would still be attached.

That turned out nice.

Also explains the confusion. The factory cover fits tighter and is carpeted. Might flop on speed bumps but that's about it.

All day. I used it for trips up the Central Coast several times. Going to part with it since I make fewer trips in the 914.
