Hi all,

Trying to establish a fair market value of this factory 914-6 911 RS steering wheel. Factory numbers are 914 347 806 10 dated 4/70. The leather has dry cracks otherwise very clean. I also have in excellent condition the horn button. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I get around $600 for one like that. Usually from the EarlySreg guys. It's not really an RS wheel. RS wasn't made in 70. The 911 guys care about the dates as well as the model number.

It's not a 6 wheel with that plastic cup on the back..... and other details.
It is leather and still desirable.

Just pull the plastic cup off and it has the 2 counter sunk holes for the 914-6 and 911 cancel ring.

806 10 is a real six wheel. Someone just bolted on an early 4 plastic hub. Before people cared about date codes and model numbers, they were all just steering wheels.

Doh !!!
...not the usual course of events.
The numbers are the facts.
Good clarification Mark.
Isn't there a different recess at the shaft entrance ?

No. The hubs between an early for and a six are identical. Only the model numbers are different.

I gave away a leather wrapped one at the open house, so there is one point of reference, $0.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif) All of the bits for these cars are getting pricey.

I've been keeping a spreadsheet on my build and it is getting up there to the point that I struggle knowing that I could have bought a really nice driver at that price point.

But, then I console myself by knowing that said driver would likely still need lots of the stuff I've bought. Plus, I will drive in the knowledge that the parts are fresh and not 40-50 year old worn out stuff.

The first rule of 914World is "Never add up your receipts." If you add up all you spend on your 914, you will be astonished at how much you spent on this rusty old sports car. You could have had a nice, new Cayman R with good, cold AC and a factory warranty. You end up selling your 914, buying the Cayman, and dropping out of 914World. That starts the self-loathing for being a quitter, your wife ends up hating you, your kids start to despise you, your dog poops in your shoes, and the Fedex and UPS Delivery drivers for your route get laid off because you stopped buying parts. They lose their houses, their kids end up in a foster homes. They get resentful, and one day they show up and trash your Cayman.

Places like Zims, Pelican, Stoddard, etc.. go out of business due to the lack of parts sales. Their employees lose their houses, cars, and families. The same goes for the families and kids of the parts suppliers. All those kids go to foster homes and end up living in a closet under the stairs and eating scraps.

Don't total your receipts. There is a HUGE economy built just to supply you with parts to keep your rusty old 914 sorta on the road.

Think of all the children your parts purchases help to feed. Think of the children!

So, keeping, maintaining, restoring, and driving a Porsche 914 is going to save the world?

That's brilliant, Clay.

I never thought about the repercussions of rejecting 914 ownership.

803 10 & 806 10 are six wheels
804 10 & 805 10 are early four wheels
All exactly the same hub but some people care about numbers.

You’re so right. But I’m an engineer - I can’t help myself. I’m addicted to spreadsheets and knowing my car down to the last but and bolt.

Now that I have realize the implications for so many, I promise to forge ahead even knowing what it cost! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)
