How hard is it? I have a plasma cutter and an air body saw, but the obvious complications look to be the hinge areas, the door handle area, and the impact beam. Can I get it off without messing that stuff up? Will the door become a floppy mess that will never be straight again?

Never did one on a 914 but I did one on my 68 Camaro. Looks he same. Start prying the folded edge out and work your way around the outside.

Of course you have to have a new skin to put back on to replace it first. If your thinking of taking a old skin off and reusing it, why? Just hang the door.

I haven't done it, but you could leave enough sheetmetal at the edges to provide support. The problem would be getting it too hot when you're cutting it apart and warping it out of shape. Go slow and you should be OK.

Thanks guys. I am taking it off for modifications. I hate how front flares always have to dissapear at the door line, so I'm going to extend the flare into the door. It's gonna be fun. BTW, I cut out the beam in mine. It is not welded to the door in the middle, only at each end. I was able to get it out without screwing up the outside paint on the door.

When I saw it done, they used a grinder, and ground down the edge of the door until they got to the lip of the door frame. Then the outer door skin just popped off. Didn't use a saw at all. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Cool I'm going to Harbor Freight to get a heat gun to remove my interior tar, Might just pickup a grinder and a cutting tool too. Forgot all about that bar in late model cars.

Well.....the problem is you can't really get in there to cut all of it out. You'll save more by replacing it with a early door.
