Seems to be a benifit to cooling the transmission fluid, at what point does adding spray bars to the case to supply additional cooling/lubrication happen?

I have it on reliable authority that the tranny is good for up to six hours attached to a 906 engine. After that the bearings in the intermediate plate get cooked. This is due to the reversed layout of the tranny compared to the 911 for which it was designed. Apparently a modification to the intermediate plate to facilitate lubrication of the bearings works well.

Well, several of the vintage 2L race cars had transmission problems, usually with the ring and pinion from what I remember. When they added the pump + cooler + returns to the top of the case the failures went away. That's why I added the system to mine. Since I did not have the temp sender installed before adding the cooler I don't know what the temps ran, but afterward they never get above 220 degrees F. At the race in Tecate I was shifting into 1st at about 20MPH twice a lap and temps stayed under 220. I'd say it is much cheaper than transmission work in the long run.

That's what the 916 mods are, right? It's a drive, pump, and squirters for the R&P?

i would think spraying the bearings would be the best bet to make sure they stay cool. the gears pretty much are spraying them selves. also doing the R+P would not be a bad idea due to the amount of stress there.

miles is half way correct -
there were 2 types of 916 transmissions...(im told) some had integral pumps and spraybars, while the rest did not. basically a 915 converted for mid engine usage..... the race ones were more intircate |
