Getting ready to install the engine lid grill pieces and cannot recall if the factory painted under them black or left them body color?
Did some searching under the classic and originality threads, couldn't find a solid answer. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Satin black or same as grill. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Edit: also same for the side grills. Here's an interesting edit to my question: Since 4cyl 914's had black rain trays, that makes sense. What about 914-6's? Also painted black or left body color similar to a 911? |

Experts will chime in but there is no interest from a design point of view of showing back reinforcing structure. The grill is black and we shouldn't be seeing the background through the grill, so I am 99.9999999999% sure it doesn't matter if it is a -4 or -6, again from a design/look standpoint.

They all came satin black under the grills - all 3 grills on the engine lid. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Got it, thanks guys. I think I still have enough PPG trim black to do it.
If it's preference, I would prefer same as grill color. Keeps it cleaner looking. I set the grill on and seeing body color through the black is very busy looking. Thanks for the feedback, was waffling a bit on it. |

Spent more time masking than scuffing or painting. Wait for this to cure and install grills.

Satin black or same as grill. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Edit: also same for the side grills. matt black if mine is anything to go by. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) its original. it could have faded. but its flat. its hand painted too. you can tell. splashed on with a brush. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) pretty funny. root werks has done a much better job than the factory. |

Finally got the grill welt from 914Rubber and installed the grill. I can see why under the grill should be the same color as the grill.
Thanks all for helping to confirm that. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Dan, did you end up painting the under side as well? Just the top side, feedback from some others said theirs was body color underneath. I just tossed an old sheet over the engine, probably should have taped things off for cleaner lines. Certain I got a little overspray on the underside of the engine lid. |
