So I had no problem pulling the speedo out of the cluster, removed the lighting and spade connector, and unscrewed the retainer on the speedometer cable. But the cable doesn't want to come out of the speedometer housing, and I don't know how much is too much force. Is it ok to grip the brass collar sticking out of the cable housing and wriggle it loose, or does that stay in the speedometer? Also, I don't see where to disconnect the reset cable - where on the dash do I look for that?

be gentle but tug on it.

reset cable stays on speedo.

That is how it is on my 70 1.7

Disconnect the reset cable from the knee pad. It should be under the cigarette lighter. The reset cable will come out still connected to the speedometer

The reset cable is held into the speedo with a plastic clip. Pinch it with a small pair of pliers and pop ot out. You can disconnecit from under the dash. Depending on the year it will have a steel or plastic knob. The pkastic knob pylls off. The steel knob has a 2mm set set that needs a jewelers screwdrover to loosen. After removing the knob there is a threaded retaining ring and washer.
Wiggle the cable back and forth to see if you can break it loose. If you disconnect it at the trans you can pull the gauge out father and it should help to work on it.

Yes I saw this knob and felt the cable going back behind the dash but did not know what it was. I thought it was a fused or something else installed by someone else.

and if you're still learning about 914's don't learn the hard way and reset the trip meter while you're moving. it'll strip an internal gear.

Reset while stopped ONLY.
