Yup, second Dr. Evil. He'll tell you how to box and ship to make it easy. He has done so many and a lot of happy 914 owners.

Yup, second Dr. Evil. He'll tell you how to box and ship to make it easy. He has done so many and a lot of happy 914 owners. I shipped a trans to Dr. Evil last year. I was told to go to walmart and pick up a specific trash can with lid. Zip tie the lid and ship via fedex. It cost me around $100.00 to ship. He suggested and built me a special geared 914 gear box for my v8 conversion. Couldn't be happier. The gears perfectly match my motor. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=56892 |

Just did this, about $200 shipping round trip to Dr. Evil from the East Coast. Great working with him and I'm looking forward to the results.

Shipping is easy. 120qt igloo cooler. Strap the trans to a piece of plywood that will fit the bottom and drop it in. The plywood keeps the trans from moving in the cooler. Duct tape it shut and then ship FedEx / ups. Weight is 75lbs.
We charge $1,450 + parts to rebuild a trans to like new. Even with shipping, it will often cost a lot less to have it done here than on the west coast. |

I can point you to a local shop in the Bay Area that will rebuild your transmission. Still, if it were my transmission, I'd be packing it up and shipping it off to Dr. Evil. Why not have the acknowledged expert in refurbishing/rebuilding these transmissions do it? A known track record, an excellent reputation, and in all my dealings with him he has been an upstanding person.

Dr. Evil (Mike) in Ohio did mine as well. I shipped it to him. He specializes in 914 transmissions and has all of the parts your box might need if yours are worn ; )

Both Heyer Performance in Mountain view and RMG in Sunnyvale can rebuild your transmission. They will cost more than Dr. Evil. They're good folks, though; I have used both of them for my 914 and my wife's 911 over the years.

Dr Evil and Mark are both excellent sources for rebuilds. There likely others as well. I would also check with each one of them to see if they have cores so you don’t have to ship yours and save a few bucks in shipping and faster turnaround

The good doctor gets my vote, he really knows these boxes. I watched in amazement, Horror? As he poured the guts out of my trans onto his workbench. It was like second nature for Mike to inspect and reassemble all the bits and pieces. My gearbox is working very well now.
Oh, and he did all of this after a late night bourbon fest! Great job Mike! Rob |

I would also check with each one of them to see if they have cores so you don’t have to ship yours and save a few bucks in shipping and faster turnaround Thank Ben. The majority of our rebuilds are 915 trans but there are still a couple 914’s that make it into the mix. Doing a 930 turbo trans for a member here - and eventually Ben’s / MB911 transmission.
