Graphite powder has always been recommended to lube speedometer cables
might not be easy to do with the cable being so long William |

Years ago I was broke and needed to fix the speedo cable on my 914 before I got a ticket. So I took the speedo cable and made an adapter to hook the speedometer end to a 2L bottle. Made a way to hang it up out of a coat hanger. Then I cut a hole in the bottom and filled it full of liquid B12. Hung it up for a week with a bucket on the transmission end of the cable. After a week I refilled the bottle with motor oil, and let it sit for a week. The cable worked fine after that.
But honestly, that is way too much work for something I can buy relatively inexpensively. It is all about time vs money. Which do you have more of these days? |

I'm informed that there are tabs located in the tunnel that hold the cable in place, and that fishing a new cable is no fun. Old cable was not jerky when the speedo died, has 58K mi. of use, so I'm hoping to avoid the fishing expedition to install a new cable if it is the drive that is at fault. I've already bought a new cable from 914 Rubber just in case. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chowtime.gif) |

Take the old one lube it up very well. Save it for back up, unless broken. Matt |

While holding the new cable straight up and down sprain plenty of lube down the top. Using your drill in reverse to help lubricant run down line. The lubricant I would use is a liquid now, but then turns to a graphite or equivalent. Good luck. |

Jamie you can also use graphite spray lube for locks. You can get it from auto parts house or hardware stores Amazon sells it too may not last as long as the powder
