An insert for 275? What and why? Is it just rarity? Some strange one off design that no other car uses?

That's the cheapest I could find autoatlanta/pelican etc. I am looking at the fronts. Now I just found these on eBay, from autoatlanta and that seems more appropriate. 195 for two boge reproductions. https://ebay.us/m/UTa4Zh |

Rebuilt shocks seem to be a thing of the past. I agree one of the best deals out there for stock ride is AA's reproduction shock deal. The insert you are showing is for a Bilstein strut ONLY, not stock 914 insert for Boge strut.

I think I might go with the reproduction from autoatlanta. This car is a driver and the last thing I want is to change how it feels on the road. Right now it is quite comfortable to cruise in and is fine on the track. My front right is leaking though.

That is what I have B6's, so I hunt for a deal |

Yup a terrible shame there aren’t Monro-matic or Gabriel’s aren’t available for the 914 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) But there is always KYB.
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bootyshake.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) But seriously - there is a huge difference in the internals both in quality and function between cheap dampers and Bilstein, Boge, Koni. If you want more detail on why the costs are high, I’ll post / link you to a mini dissertation if you really care (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) |

Same deal with 914-4 CV's. It totally baffles me that a car will huge production numbers has common wear parts that are either NLA, has substandard reproduction copies or is priced like they are gold plated. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif)

Yeah, not necessary. Too bad the cheap option appears to be so sub standard. I understand paying a bunch for a racing/fancy shock but the lack of a reasonably priced stock equivalent that doesn't suck was surprising. The boge reproductions seem appropriately priced, but it's too bad the big supplier options appear to be 'suck' for 48 dollars or 300-500 dollars for the next step up

Buyer beware- I saw a post on Facebook where someone bought AA’s reproduction insert and they were longer than the original Boge inserts such that the gland nut only engaged a couple of threads.
I don’t want to spread any misinformation since I have not used them myself, but it might be good to see if somebody here has recent experience with them if you decide to go that route. |

we had the original boges duplicated by a suspension firm in England. The give the exact factory ride and are not harsh like the bilstein/koni shocks. Easy straight forward installation, but we used a generic gland nut, so when tight shows some extra threads

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif) 100,000 or so 914s are not huge production numbers by anyone’s standards. Even less on the road when you consider rust, accidents, and long term disrepair. Quite honestly - we are extremely fortunate to have a vendor base as large as we do for a niche vehicle. |

There has to be other manufactures, maybe early BMW 2002 or others. I am not saying our vendors shouldn't make a profit. I'm saying their options to sell parts are too limited. |

Fully agree But even including stuff like 912 and 2002 it’s still niche to anyone considering the big $$ for tooling up something like a CV joint. Much easier to amortize across millions of VW bugs across the world vs a 100k - 200k of something for example. |

I think I’ll see if they can rebuild mine. Pricey There is a place in Sonoma CA that rebuilds Koni. Their site says: KONI shock rebuild cost starts at approximately $300 each for single adjustable and $400 for dual adjustable |

@dr914 @autoatlanta.com
I saw the post on the FB Porsche 914 group and commented. When this thread popped up here, I revisited the FB post. George said "Carlos that was really really STUPID to say". He did not reply to my post. He did not reference full name. I didn't get a notification. I replied to his comment so he would get a notification. "George Hussey Tell me exactly what I said that was "really, really stupid". I said they were repops. Your website states they are repops. I said they were poorly made. I inferred that because the gland nut could not be fully seated to the strut housing. Your website states that the gland nut does not fully engage. I said they were cheap. From your website: Boge repops are about $100. Koni Sports are $289. Bilstein $260. Objectively they are cheap. I do have a question for you. If I used you your boge repop with an OEM gland nut, Would I be able to fully seat the gland nut?" I'm going to paraphrase Johnnie Cochrane. "if it doesn't fit, you must return it". |
