Engelbert designed a solution for the 911 to allow the rear turnsignal to double as brake lights for a larger brake footprint. I believe he is planning to market it for the 911 guys. Because of the layout of the 911 rear light housing, to install the module in the housing, the housing has to be removed and opened up.

I thought this would work well for the 914 and should be easy to install as access to the rear housing and wires is in the trunk. Engelbert was ok with me basically copying his solution.

Here's a link to his 911 solution:

rothaus (Engelbert) 911 RTS to Brakes

The RTS-Brake module would reside below each rear light housing. One for each side. Here's the module being tested on the bench.

The module has 6 wires. Brake-in, Brake-out, RTS-in, RTS-out, and 2 grounds. The wires have QC connectors and go between the OEM wiring and the light housings.

Attached Image

The IN wires have male connectors and the OUT wires have female connectors.

On each side, pull the brake, RTS, and GND wires from the housing. The wires connect to the IN wires and the OUT wires goes to the housing.

On my '71, the RTS QC connectors don't have insulation so a short piece of heat shrink provides the insulation.

Once the RTS connectors are insulated, pull one wire at a time and install.

Here are the modules in action on my 914. My 914 is set up to always have the running lights on with the ignition.

I built an extra set if someone would like to try them out. If folks are interested, I'll be selling these for $45/pair.

Hey Jerry - of course I'd love to try em out but I'm a few weeks away from being back with the 914. So....if you provide a link, I'm all in on these. You can't have too much light on these little cars!

Boy... I run the Euro rear lenses on my 6 but really like the idea of adding more light when stepping on the brake pedal. I will have to think about this as I love all things Spoke Works which make our cars, in my humble opinion, much safer on the road. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

@mepstein

Mark,

Sounds good. I'll have these in the mail tomorrow. I don't have any 1/4 heat shrink tubing on hand for the RTS connector if it is bare like my '71. I used a 1 inch piece for each side. Electrical tape would do in a pinch. Please PM your address.

Hi Tom,

I've added the modules to my website.

Are you going to the Pittsburgh Historic Grand Prix car show? I'll be there with my 914.

Here's a connection diagram for these RTS-Brake modules. Connecting these modules is straightforward. Pull one wire at a time and plug the OEM wire into the corresponding module wire color and wire color to the housing.

Attached Image

All the connection information and OEM wire colors were used from Jeff Bowlsby's diagram:

@Spoke , I have your LED Brake Boards on my car but have not upgraded to the LED turnsignal boards. Will this mod work with my incandescent turn signal bulbs or will I need to upgrade to LED?

Thanks-Rick

Yes it should work. These are 2Amp relays and the 1056 21W bulbs should only draw about 1.8Amp. It is close but should work.

Do I see piggyback terminals on the left side housing connections? If so, are they needed?

Good eye. I didn't want to comment on that just to keep things simple. The piggyback connector is for my 3rd brake light on the roll hoop. I steal brake power from this pin.

Here's a description of my 3rd brake light install:
